Todd Snider got a nod in the obit section. Bright spot for me
  4. I'm Mount Olive fan myself but also love Kosher salty briny spears. The Kosher ones seem to work best for cramps. Maybe the higher salt. I do have some Five hour energy size pickle juice deals that I take with me for heavy exercise days
  5. I live in the Florida Panhandle, which is not exactly known as a golf mecca. We have Sandestin—with its three perfectly respectable public courses—and Watersound Club, which is for the Surly elite. Recently, though, two new golf developments have appeared about 30 miles inland from the beach, away from 30A, South Walton, Destin, and Panama City—out where people normally just drive past pine trees and wonder how much farther it is to the coast. The one that’s furthest along is Old Shores (https://oldshores.com/), from the same people who brought us Bandon Dunes and Sand Valley. Like those places, Old Shores will be public, which immediately makes it more interesting and more dangerous to my wallet. The other course is called Old Charlie, and it has much more of an Ohoopee vibe—private, mysterious, and seemingly designed so that I will never accidentally end up there. (https://shop.oldcharliegolfclub.com/) Old Shores is supposed to open for founders’ play this fall and be fully open next year. I’ve driven past that property a jillion times and never once thought, this would make a great golf course. But Michael Keiser spotted it on Google Earth, called Tom Doak, and now—apparently—that’s all it takes. I just hope I’m not too old to enjoy it… or young enough to still walk 36.

  10. John Craigie. I promoted a concert for him in my little town. I loved his song Michael Collins. I asked him if he ever heard from MC and he said no. I thought I had way to find out what MC said about the song. My uncle was in Congress and the chairman of the Science Committee and the Space Subcommittee. I knew I could get in touch with Collins and I could tell Craigie the great news. Here's the letter I wrote to General Collins. Dear General Collins: I hope this letter finds you well. Please allow me to take a few minutes of your time to share something I found especially meaningful and that relates directly to you. By way of introduction, my uncle is Don Fuqua, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives during your years in the space program. Don chaired the House Science and Technology Committee and was deeply involved in matters relating to NASA. When I was younger, he gave me the enclosed Apollo 11 photograph. I have kept it all these years, and it even survived a house fire at my residence. That, however, is not the main purpose of this letter. I have always been intrigued by both space and music, and recently I heard a song written by a wonderful West Coast artist named John Craigie. The song—on the enclosed CD—is about you. I was so struck by it that I later booked Mr. Craigie to perform in Florida. While he was here, I had the opportunity to spend some time with him and learned that his father attended school with Buzz Aldrin. Over the years, Mr. Craigie and General Aldrin spoke from time to time about the Apollo mission. Mr. Craigie is an exceptional songwriter and storyteller, with a unique perspective. In our conversation, he told me he had long wondered how you felt serving as the command module pilot rather than being one of the astronauts who landed on the moon. That question stayed with him for years, and he finally put it to music on his most recent studio album. I asked whether he had ever spoken with you about the song, and he said he had not—explaining that he did not want to intrude or appear to be seeking anything from you. I shared with him my uncle’s connection to the space program and showed him the enclosed photograph. I told him I wanted to see if we could make sure the song reached you. A few weeks ago, at a family reunion, I told my uncle the story and played him the song. He was excited about both. Don then contacted General Stafford, who provided your address, which was relayed to me. I hope you do not mind this intrusion into your personal life. Neither my uncle, Mr. Craigie, nor I are seeking any commercial gain. We simply wanted you to hear the song and to let you know that people are still talking about—and thinking about—you and your role in that remarkable moment in history. If you have the time and inclination to share your thoughts about the song or our effort to get it to you, we would truly enjoy hearing from you. My email address and phone number are listed above. Mr. Craigie’s email address is johncraigie@johncraigiemusic.com. Thank you for allowing us to share this with you, and thank you for the memories you have given all of us. Respectfully, I never heard a word!
