yeah, I mean ideally I wouldn't have sold but we aren't in any position to pull off buying without the cash from the sale. But your point is well taken.

wow, thanks for the response. That makes a ton of sense, and definitely clarifies my thinking.

All Encompassing Mortgage and Real Estate Thread
Looking for some input from the in-the-know crowd here. My wife and I sold our starter home in Austin last month, made nearly double on it in 5 years. Hooray. We sold in order to a) get more space as we are looking to start having kids and b) get closer to my in-laws as my FIL has MD and they need some help with day to day tasks. We have been looking in the Buda area, west of 35. But even that area is getting insane, with houses finishing 60-75k over asking (ending up at 625 or so). Part of me is thinking, is this all too much? Is this really where things are going to stay, or are we heading towards a bubble? I have considered just renting in the area and seeing how things play out but I also know that interest rates are only going up and I might just be kicking myself if this isn't a bubble situation. Thoughts on the situation?

Elite private schools and college admissions
Big surprise, the lawyers turned this into a law school discussion 😉 In my experience being in tech, where you went to school matters at lot less than other fields. It probably matters at the FAANG level perhaps, but for example our software architect and principal engineer both went to no name schools in the midwest. Perhaps it is because it requires a more demonstrable skillset than others. If you can prove you know how to code at a high level, no one cares where you learned it. Just my observations.

Why go to an expensive school if you’re just going into biz dev? Shoot, don’t even need a degree to do that

My wife's late grandfather was on the 1950 NC winning team, and apparently they give a season ticket in perpetuity. His wife sent us that one and we got the seat next to it, so we'll have two season tickets for the first time. We really caught the bug in the last post season, and its a great team to watch more often. Her grandfather had some cool stories of playing back then, back at Clark Field. He was a pitcher who ended up in the then Milwaukee Braves farm system, pitched against Frank Robinson and Mickey Mantle, amongst others.

we're basically turning into European soccer where a random oligarch decides a team is going to be good now.

What's going on with Austin murders?
What is interesting about it is that it doesn't seem to be pandemic driven, at least not primarily. Other countries saw a decrease of violent crime in 2020 while ours shot up. Certainly there is an aspect of policing reform at play here in the wake of the George Floyd murder. Whether it is actually due to policy or funding changes, a reaction by police forces to what they perceive as widespread hostility (some real, some imagined) or something that was going to happen regardless is hard to tell.

Depression, OCD, and whatever else ails you between the ears
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I need to really set aside time to learn mindfulness. I seem to apply any bad experiences in the past to the future. Like how bad things went with my previous company, and leaving to another that ended up being a really bad fit (they didn't tell me there would be travel involved in the interview process which is a no-go for my wife). Now I am at a good company that is growing a lot and has a lot of opportunity to grow but I just keep expecting things to go bad like they have in the past. Like I can't just live in the present. Anyways, I'm glad to be able to talk about mental issues here, especially in a predominantly male space as it can feel a bit isolating dealing with anxiety as a man.

Unless I am misunderstanding you, it does sound like you could use a fitting to get them sized down if they are just standard length men’s clubs. Off the rack is generally for a 5’9” man so shortening them an inch or so could definitely help.

Depression, OCD, and whatever else ails you between the ears
Does anybody else always fear the worst? I find myself fearing the future all the time, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I had some bad experiences with work earlier this year and finally find myself at a good place as of November. It has been nothing but good so far but I still catastrophize all the time. “What if these people quit? What if they ask me to do things I don’t know how to do/can handle?” Its exhausting and I can’t seem to just exist in the moment and not have anxiety about the future.
