Herman and his staff were out coached last week.
It doesn't happen often, and it seems to be happening less and less, but it happened last weekend, biggern' hell.
OSU isn't a great team, but I think Gundy is a quality coach and he does have some key quality players who showed out in that game....that boundary corner they stuck to Collin Johnson chief among them.
Gundy's attack on Locke and Wheeler was as surgical as it was impressive...and if the other coaches on our schedule were not aware of our weaknesses prior Gundy's clinic our tendencies, they sure as hell are now.
Gundy has "coached down" to inferior teams' levels this season as well.....see KSU.
It happens to teams that have to play their best to win...which Herman has said to everyone that will listen that we still need to do.
When we can win with our "C" game, we will have arrived and need to be talking about playoff runs and shit...we are not there yet.
There was this recruit back when Mack first got here...."Mike Williams" I think. Before Hudl or Twitter or maybe even Rivals...anyway...right after signing day that Feb, Mack came to the Longhorn Club luncheon at the Ervin Center with a film of all of the players who had just signed. I forget now which class it was...it may have been the one with Roy Williams, Sloan and BJ...anyway..this linebacker Williams absolutely stole the show. Best fucking highschool "highlight reel" of that bunch, or any other bunch I had ever seen. Left the luncheon awestruck. I don't think he ever played a down at Texas, and I have never seen another highlight reel like that until this Floyd thing...same kind of deal ....violent.
I think this is part and parcel of him getting better at these overall.
He is much more comfortable up there and it shows. (I am sure that winning 6 in a row helped this, but even so)..he is not nearly as defensive nor arrogant . His delivery is thoughtful and honest and not condescending....... and not just coach speak...I like the way these go now. (not excusing the ass kicking he and we took on Saturday, but there are a hundred other threads about that..this small part of his job seems to be smoothing out a bit)
the old axiom of "the trademark Orlando defense ....playing base on the first two downs, getting you into 3rd and long - where he wants you - and then really dialing up the exotics" has a glaring hole in it right now.
agree with this.
Britt was a pal back in the day and I root for his kid, because he is his kid in addition to being a Longhorn player who loves playing here.....but fuck he is frustrating to watch ....."slanting" or "setting the edge" or not....dude can't get anyone on the ground to get the defense off the field - I am not sure that he hasn't had the best coaching in that regard....he just doesn't seem to have the skills.
I have never been more confident in teams picking up 3rd and long every fucking time as I am in our opponents doing it to us this year.
Right after Maryland I was more concerned with the defense than the offense...I was sure that Herman would put his stamp on the offense and, with a marginally improved OL, that the glaring errors on that side of the ball could be fixed.
I am not sure that this defense can be fixed.
We don't have a pass rush, and when we do get there, we can't tackle anyone in their back field..we can't stop marginal quarterbacks from roasting us and there is no help coming for it this year with these players.
