Rolling 401K advice, not mine
This is why I’ve never rolled my wife’s 401k from her past job into an IRA. We’ve done back door/mega back door, and not having to think about the pro rata rule is great.

the academy's appeal to watch movies in theaters
You think watching Empire for the first time at home while partially doom scrolling/texting is equivalent to seeing it in a big screen with a group of people collectively having their mind blown?

the academy's appeal to watch movies in theaters
I'm not stating my opinion of the viewing experience. I am telling you why a director - the artist - is pleading for people to see his art via a certain mode of presentation, which is the question you posed several times. But I agree with your final point. Many people don't have the taste to discern a Barolo from 2 buck chuck. Same thing with consumption of art. On average, ease and cost will usually win out, which is why theater going will be a novel experience in 15 years or so.

NBA 2024-25 Season Thread
I went to MSG last night to catch the Steph (and Jimmy) show. The guy is just so fun to watch even if you are rooting against him. Incredible how the three guys you named continue to thrive.

the academy's appeal to watch movies in theaters
There is a revenue factor, sure, but making movies is an art form. Like any other art form, the artist wants their product to be consumed in an ideal viewing experience to the greatest extent possible. Watching Oppenheimer on your run of the mill TV with factory speakers (and , god forbid, motion smoothing) is like looking at a screensaver of Guernica. If streaming only replaced blockbuster on a 1:1 basis, there would be no issue. It's the fact that it's aggressively eating away at the theatrical viewing opportunities. The better comparison is really the replacement of vinyl records and CDs with compressed audio files as the primary form of music consumption. Sure, you have any song any time you want, but the tradeoff is losing much of the quality of the product as originally created.

the academy's appeal to watch movies in theaters
I love going to the movies. The sound, the screen, the shared experience, the lack of phones, it's all great. It is true that if you are the kind of moviegoer who only sees Marvel/popcorn flicks, the shared experience at an AMC filled with people who also have bad taste is probably not going to be great.

Not the thread for it, but also not very hard to figure out

All things SNL
Shane appeals to the middle aged, suburban white guy. Not much else.

The 2025 Oscars
Well done Sean and Mikey. Adrien Brody, yeesh

The 2025 Oscars
All the acting was pretty great in what was otherwise a formulaic, silly movie.

All things SNL
I generally don’t find Gillis very funny, but the Shelby Foote bit was hilarious. Burns giving that guy so much airtime has always been comical.

2025 Texas Coaching/Support Staff Thread
I’m not getting fussed over Sark hires yet, but this is comical. We would fucking roast the hicks in college station if they hit up hospice for a hire like this.

Magazine Dreams
Wow, I’m surprised this is finally coming out. I remember hearing buzz about it after Sundance 2023, and then Majors decided to assault his girlfriend.

My dog died
Sorry for your loss, JGray. When my dog died about a year ago, it was one of the saddest moments of my life (which I realize is just an insane thing to be true, but it is). As many will say, remember the great times and be glad you got such a long ride!

Tell me about New York City
Couple new-ish restaurants I’ve been that I’d recommend: 1. Borgo - fantastic Mediterranean/Italian, with wood fire in the middle of the restaurant. Wine list is a bit too focused on natural for my liking, but there are a few traditional gems. This spot is being added to our regular rotation. 2. Smithereens - upscale New England in a cool subterranean space in the east village. Helps that my friend is the co owner and runs the beverage side of the house (former som at Ko). 3. Zimi’s - nice provencal food 4. La Tete d’Or - great client/expense account spot. Boulud does steakhouse. 5. Cafe Commerce - this is a revival of a place I used to frequent in my 20s when it was actually on Commerce. I would say good, not great, but glad it’s back

Movies you're ashamed to admit that you enjoy
The Boondock Saints. Came out when I was in 4th or 5th grade. I probably watched it 100 times between 7th and 9th grade. Now I see it has 26% on RT. Ah well.
