When I was a kid we'd drive HWY 90 from SA out the the ranch near the Big Bend Nat'l Park main entrance. I always thought it was funny seeing all the dams in Sanderson. My grandmother, who grew up there explained that they once had a flood that washed away the entire town to the extent that even the graveyard was unearthed. She told me they found many of those remains in the Gulf weeks later around the mouth of the Rio Grande.
If she wasn't bullshitting me, which I can't rule out, then I guess that distance from Hunt/Kerrville to Canyon Lake doesn't seem all that out of the question.
We didn't talk too much darkness, but he did tell me that it would not be surprising if some of the victims ended up in Canyon Lake.
That was a sobering comment.
Dropped that brisket and smoked corn on the cob off in Boerne for my son-in-law and his DPS recovery team pals. That hotel parking lot looked like the big DPS Death Star HQ on Lamar. Like an elephant grave yard of black and white SUV cruisers.
Anyway, I guess the smoker gods were with me today because this text from him just came though on my drive back to Canyon Lake...
No idea. I don't want to ask him either.
I just got back from NB HEB. Grabbed two big ass Prime briskets and am going to get them on the smoke first thing in the morning and then take them over to his team's hotel in Boerne tomorrow night when they get back for the day. Not sure what I'll hear, but I'm bracing for anything.
I just don't know how these guys deal with this stuff. I'm damned near ready to end it when one of my dogs dies. lI just don't see how.
I'll paraphrase his text to my daughter because I believe this has now been figured into the totals. This came over at around 10:45am or so and he's in between Hunt and Camp Mystic -->
"We've found 2 kids and the other CID found 3 more. Maybe one from Mystic but not sure. She'd be the right age to be at the camp but no telling. Finding some that weren't at the camp. We're looking. There's so much stacked up. FEMA may be coming in with equipment...".
I'm gonna stop there.
My son-in-law is a DPS detective and is there working recovery with the entire department from Victoria. He just texted my daughter (former Mystic camper). I'm not sure about posting specifics on numbers, but get ready to hear some rough news pretty soon on what they've found this morning.
If "normal" is defined by the abnormal period since 2021 with jack squat for rain (except a good flood Aug '24) then I'd say it would take between 1-2 yrs. We're at about 230,000 acre ft right now and 1 yr ago today we were at 212,000. The red dot I put on today's graph is a pretty good visual of the answer to your question. Coincidently that dot also represent the exact time that I bought my house here. This is why I don't do Vegas --->
I think I was thinking of this one. I was living in SA in 2018, so I know I couldn't have been on Lake ATX then. It was more like 7 to 10 days of heavy rain over LBJ/Marble Falls area thing. And right before that the lake was close to an all-time low...
