Texas Football 2025 - Seven Win Steve Rides Again
No hostility here either. Just talking football. I was too talented to ever play Oline. Just joking - sorta. But I do appreciate you guys. I don’t know the footwork aspect of the line so any aspect of that is appreciated. And I looked at it again and can’t determine jack. Robertson is blocking right although not really engaged. No one blocks Hill. It looks as though the DT is inside Stroh but can’t exactly tell which way he wants to take him because Gibsons desired path isn’t totally clear. You can only see 3-4 guys in the clip at a time. Caldwell, Robertson, Stroh and Gibson then Brevard and Hill so it looks like they’re going against the 1/1b defense. Probably crappy O across the board.

Yes, he’s playing LG. Yes, it’s a handoff with Gibson going off Strohs right hip. It is not a wide angle shot so you can’t see much. The DT didn’t make the play on the RB and not sure he even negatively impacted him. My initial thought is that the block was effective even if ugly with the DT trying to cut backside rather than fight thru. But too many unknowns based on the limited view.

Don’t run from expectations. Like it or not, we are one of the favorites to win it all this year. Ohio State and UGa lost more than we did. We are going to match up well with anybody and everybody. Sark, CDC, the NIL crew have built this for sustainability as far as us common folk can see.

Gotcha. That probably is where it gets into the unknown.

Makes sense. An era of system over function. As Wing T kid, I’ve grown to have a personal dislike for that offense. The halfback with his hand in the dirt. Too restrictive for vision and less explosive/quick to the hole, in my opinion. Nevermind are more restrictive QB run game. Is there anything in particular that stands out on the secondary? I don’t spend much time looking at the secondary but have found their matchups versus opponents curious a time or two. For example, I believe they tagged Hill on the Henderson screen for a TD. So probably more of what I’ve questioned would be matchups, which I’m not sure correlates to grading. I do not know that for certain.

It’s still the preseason so let’s put the cart before the horse. I’m not crowning but merely polishing it ready for wear.

Just out of curiosity, what was criminal about it? There are elements of the here and now college football world I don’t like, but it’s opened up the potential of the University of Texas. I’m going to say Sark ends it as the most accomplished football coach at Texas.

FYI, I like the 12-0 thought. My biggest reservation is the difficulty getting up every week and a slip will occur somewhere along the line. I do think PFF is reasonably reliable. I’ve spent time trying to understand their approach and believe that to be reasonable. Their NFL work seems to be their bread and butter with a smaller pool of games so it’s likely better but would lean towards their CFB work as improving. Their processes are very similar between the NFL and college. It’s certainly not perfect but comparisons by position or stats should be pretty solid. Within that, you cannot remove all the subjectivity.

I’d say the same for run blocking. Or the you’ve got 5/6 to block 7. The old toss for a 7 yard loss versus Ohio State. The two safeties made the play. We don’t have enough to block them.

Your beliefs are obviously opinions so not necessarily wrong, but I’ll provide some counterpoints. I reference PFF quite often for several reasons. It allows for measurement relative to peers. Keep in mind that their overall pass blocking and run blocking grades include all persons not just the Oline. And with that consideration, our TEs based on what I’ve noted in the past are not great relative to their peers. Last year, Texas graded out number 2 in pass blocking, number 46 in run blocking. In 2023, that was number 3 and 54, respectively. For 2024, let’s take a look at the opposing Run Ds. We played 3 of the top 5 then 4 of the top 10 graded Run Ds. Then UGA twice at 12. Then 3 others in the top 20. Overall our blocking grade 4th in the SEC one spot behind Georgia. Our SEC schedule may not have the toughest, but we had OSU, Michigan and a 2nd game versus UGA to counter that. UGA graded 17th in pass blocking to go with 45th in run blocking. The Ohio State was 102nd and 41st. Both teams had several Olinemen drafted. Only the Texas pass coverage rated higher relative to its peers than pass protection. I’d wager the Run D grade for respective DBs trails their pass coverage similar to the run blocking. Also relatively speaking, our offenses job was more difficult than the defenses last year. You see it in the numbers, relative OFEI, DFEI, and sheer number of draft picks. You can certainly make an argument were a better pass blocking unit. Every player out there has relative strengths and weaknesses so you do have to pick a preference as to your strength. Those guys were pretty damn good. And likely one of the best units in the country with some limitations/injuries in the skill positions behind them.

At least bowling is not subjective scoring. But the art of dancing on ice is………….actually pretty damn skillful.

Understood. I was going a little deeper based on what I’d read up to your post.

@jimmyjazz let’s make sure we’re clear on one thing. Bowling is not a sport. But I do keep some mental receipts. If I’m different in this regard, I can live with it.

OSU didn’t rush particularly well against us. They had a 22 yarder and an 18 yarder (pretty sure we screwed up our alignment here). We had the dumb playcall resulting in a loss of 7 otherwise Wisner/Blue were at 4 YPC. You are correct in that you won’t dominate every game. Certainly not equal in the running and passing game. Every once in awhile, you’ll run into a TVondre Sweat type. Has it ever been normal? Maybe with unlimited scholarships. I’d wager no team exists with game ready 3rd team OTs. It’s pretty simple. Your 3rd team tackles are almost never on the field barring injury. If they aren’t still in the developmental phase, they’re likely never going to see substantial time. Often, the lesser of your 2nd team tackles will not see the field because the best will likely rotate between RT and LT. If it goes to shit and both 1st teamers go down, many teams will move a G to T before running out a 3rd teamer. I’d say it is rare to have more than 8 guys that are trusted. Sark has been quite good at managing the depth, but it is not reality to expect 3 deep at all positions because of the cost, player mobility between programs and playing time. And OL has the least amount of player rotation maybe of any position but QB.

Yep. I think part of that was the picks. A big one for a TD was in part because Guilbeau blitzed, had a relatively clean shot and whiffed. Smith rolled right then 4.29 Golden simply ran away from Thompson. That one was not a pick, but there were several including a long one from inside their 20 to inside ours.

I think someone had a bit of a theory about that. I don’t recall it being well received.

As codaxx said Barron was out the first half and Watts didn’t play. Our pass rush was ineffective. Holgerson had some somewhat unique pick plays. They spread us out pretty well and took advantage.

Texas Football 2025 - Seven Win Steve Rides Again
I’m just assuming that’s a given right now so everyone keep it up.

Agreed.

I saw that. The board harped on the checkdowns/short passing game quite a bit during the season. It’s also a counter to “make all the throws” because at some point the defense will gameplan and react to what you’re doing rather than what you theoretically can do. With respect to Quinn and checking down, it is possible he was doing as instructed even if he was a bit quick in doing so. It may be a reach but with the expanded schedule Sark was conscious of not extending his defense too much. So did that make him more conservative in looking to extend drives over quick strikes?

Texas Football 2025 - Seven Win Steve Rides Again
His numbers and PFF grading were somewhat mediocre. Syracuse had quite a few injuries upfront too. He was better at the run game than rushing the passer. Obviously, the surrounding parts are much greater here so he’ll be able to play to his strengths and with rotational parts he can play his ass off every play. I would contrast him to January as to your point. Flip their teams and January could have been frosh all American and Watson sitting behind 4 incredibly experienced guys. This is the advantage Sark has built with the depth. A guy like Watson can drop his snap count from 75% to 45% (whatever those numbers are) to stay fresh but also he’ll get to be more situationally suited for success because he’s not the only guy.

This thread has taken an odd twist. But it’s entertaining. I almost hope it lives forever. And I think Quinn represents what many fans and even experts struggle with when it comes to sports. It may also be Sarks limiting factor to get over the hump. I believe Sark was still on the mantra of “he can make all the throws” when the draft happened. That ASU throw on 4th and 13 was a great counter to that. The throw itself was far from great but the result was great. Any college QB can make that throw in practice. It was the presnap work that made the play. And it was catchable, which is all that was needed in that moment. We are at a point in which we need to make best use of our resources. We don’t need all the throws. Just get those resources opportunities. The consistency of that effort makes it work.

It’s a bit of an odd feeling for me. I’m not paying attention to the hype but can’t imagine losing 3 and/or not making the playoffs. Perhaps the hype is internally created. The last two years I’ve paid less attention to recruiting than I have in 30+ years. But I’m all in on us winning it all. Now, what I do take as true, based on reports is how hard this team works. There’s no way for me to confirm that. And, yeah, that will result in us beating the crap out of multiple teams. The UTEPs and the SHSUs will be a slight step in excitement from a spring game.

I found some humor there. It still is open for Ewers. The accuracy wasn’t good, but the bigger part may be the coaches view of his decision-making.

Yet Wingo had 2 TDs, Livingstone several longer receptions, Wisner had some good runs, the TEs caught some balls and looked like the best group. Baxter was somehow getting a goalline carry. McC had a TD but presumably from Caldwell. Goosby didn’t play much but neither did some other guys. RT is banged up. So I was told. Now if the first team O had 2/3 TDs presumably in what a half of football. Maybe more than that but I’d think not 11 or 12 possessions like a full game. Familiarity works to the Ds advantage. Maybe that’s not terrible.
