  1. DING DING DING. Because the current incarnation of the federal government has precisely one purpose: siphon as many public dollars as possible to billionaires/giant enterprises.
  2. Exhibit eleventy billion in the case of "MMA is a dumbass sport by and for dumbasses, and the rise of MMA is directly proportional in time and degree with the decline of the Republic." That said, I'm betting that Bad Bunny gets a metric shitton more female action than that dude. And when you add the qualifier of "CONSENSUAL female action, no rape," it's 1,000 metric shittons more.
  3. She'd lose by at least 11 points, because if there's one kind of woman that female voters ESPECIALLY hate, it's a woman who is hotter than they are. And Halle is hotter than 99.999999999% of human females, so she'd be toast.
  4. You fail to recognize that Texas and Texans are much, much, MUCH shittier than we even dared imagine back in our naive youth (or even just a few years ago). No. Texas voters are in no way even CLOSE to being ready to elect a black female. Not even close. A hybrid of Oprah, Michelle Obama, the breathtaking Kerry Washington, and God herself could show up as a black female candidate in Texas, and she'd lose the general by at least 10 points. And don't just think it's race. Texas voters hate women, too. Especially female Texas voters. They REALLY hate women.
  5. Oh, I think Jasmine's failings here are both hers (failure to really campaign) and systemic (well, not in the primary necessarily....I just think that the broad Texas general election voters won't vote for a black woman. We're a retrograde state full of retrograde people). I know, I know, how dare you blah blah blah. I just see a racist sexist Texas, and I call it like I see it.
  6. No it's not. It's a contest to determine who is most popular among the most rabid voters for a particular party. Sometimes, a state is so far gone that the winner of that election by the rabid also wins the popular vote in the general election (see the Republicans the past 30 years). Often, when the primary is a creature of only the very, very most rabid partisan voters, the candidate THEY select can't garner broad enough support to win a general. In Texas, the Dems bounce back and forth off the guardrails of "we voted for the uninspiring milquetoast candidate" then over to the "or we voted for the unelectable partisan darling candidate." Generally more of option 1 than option 2 in Texas, but the overarching point is that primaries are a contest decided by the most partisan voters.
  7. Cut her some slack. She's sucked Ken Paxton's dick. She's seen some shit.
  8. Yeah, but did he say that he'd rip out Dunn's eyes and skullfuck 'im? Cuz that's the energy I'm looking for. We need some Robert Duvall in Secondhand Lions energy.
  9. It's about the only fight I see in him. And I like it. But it's not enough. He needs to name the fuckers like Dunn here in Texas who are fucking people over. And truly, he needs to make it clear that he'll fight for us. And I don't mean bullshit politician-speak of "I'll fight for you." I mean "These bastards have spent the last 30 years coming for us. Well, billionaire assholes, I'm coming for YOU. You've fucked over the people of Texas. We're here to fuck back, you fucking assholes." I dunno. Maybe I just think he needs to cuss, and maybe punch someone in the fucking face. I'm dead serious, if I was running for POTUS, a key to my platform would be "I will physically kick Donald Trump's sorry ass. I'm dead serious. Anytime, any place. But that gutless pathetic pussy won't show, because he's not a man, he's a fucking pussy-ass coward. My offer stands. Come on, you fucking pussy. You need an ass-kicking, and I'm looking forward to giving it to you. Shoulda been done a long time ago, then maybe you wouldn't have grown up to be such a useless lying shithead."
  10. My complaints about Dems are two sides of the same coin: 1) When they need to show actual fighting spirit -- fuck smart talk and big words and grand policy ideas, those are DEAD now, show real fighting spirit. I want just one of these pathetic bastards to say "you come for me and my constituents, I will fuck you up" - they instead wave the biggest namby-pamby "MILQUETOAST" flag they can find. 2) When they have a chance to attack a fellow Dem, however.....they magically find that fighting spirit. Jasmine has turned all of her "attack dog" skill onto her fellow Dems, instead of telling us how she'll go to Washington and fuck people up who fuck with Texas. And Talarico has great ideas and "messaging," but that messaging needs more "I will slit fucking throats and take no fucking prisoners." And if that ain't who he is, then GTFO of the way and let someone run who WILL do that.
  11. Whoda thunk entering a pointless trade war with some of the largest buyers of US farm commodities could have this effect? What's that? Everyone who is not breathtakingly stupid or clinically insane thunk EXACTLY that? Huh. Interesting.
  12. TexArcher gets it. MAGA is the perfect cocktail of dumb, mean, and gullible. They're just pure shit, all the way around. Irredeemable, and unworthy of redemption. They are gleefully bringing about the complete destruction of the Republic, and will simultaneously proudly take credit for it and blame Obama and Biden for it. Because....and this bears repeating...they are complete shit.
  13. That's because topography makes reservoirs to the east much less efficient. As a point of comparison, Travis has a capacity of 1.3 million acre feet. Lake Conroe has a capacity of around 430,000 acre feet. They have similar surface acreage - 19k acres vs 21k acres - so that massive difference in capacity (Travis at 3X Conroe) is all topography. The steep canyons and elevation of the highland lakes allows a single small dam to hold back a large, very deep lake. The flat topography of the prairie (everything east of Mopac in this state) makes those reservoirs much smaller in terms of capacity. It's also why they aren't great for flood control, either. They just don't have much room to catch water.
  14. As a follow up, heard back from AB. He's trucking along. Just at a more introspective place in his life, less focus on foolish social media (like us), more focus on what's important. And more power to him.
  15. Now THAT is a Surly site motto.
  16. I sent him an email (he had my info somehow and messaged me a long while ago, and I still had his email). Won't dox him, but I at least don't see any obituary out there with his name. So.....odds are that he ain't dead yet! Srsly, AB...hoping that you're feeling okay these days.
  17. How could he do that? Does he have any experience with the sport of football? If he does, I sure haven’t heard about it.
  18. That's actually a great example. In our neck of the woods (Austin area), over the years I've seen or heard countless reports of "there's a mountain lion in our hood! I saw it/I saw giant tracks!" All but one time, it turned out to be a much more common urban resident: a bobcat. People INSISTED it was a mountain lion, until we got a clear-as-day shot from someone's game cam or phone as they were out for a walk. Nobody's saying it's impossible. As I mentioned, one time it WAS a mountain lion (out in a neighborhood in the Lake Travis area, IIRC). We just set a pretty solid bar for the burden of proof. Clear it.
  19. So, I guess Gillette stadium is operating on....razor thin margins?
  20. Jesus. The burden-shifting never stops, does it? You claim it’s not extraordinary to contend that intelligent alien life exists and routinely visits earth. I’d venture to guess that most people would say that’s an extraordinary claim, and functionally all relevant scientists would. And if it’s NOT extraordinary, and is in fact ordinary…then the physical PROOF should be “ordinary” and readily available. What makes a claim ordinary is its easy provability. I could claim that fish exist. And I could easily prove that ordinary claim by bringing home a salmon from the store. If I claim the Ivory Billed Woodpecker exists…well, that’s not an ordinary claim, and not easily provable, because I can’t go out there and bring one back. All of these “arguments” are self-proving. “If I lower the burden of proof, then I prove my claim!” Or “if you accept that aliens have abilities and tech vastly beyond our understanding, then it’s obvious that they’re already here visiting from anywhere in the universe and we just can’t get access to their craft.” On the other point, I don’t see anyone here saying “we’ve proven definitively that aliens DON’T exist.” Because…for the millionth time…we can’t prove the negative. The burden is impossibly high AND…that’s not how logic works. We can say “it seems very unlikely,” that sort of thing, but not “it’s definitely proven they don’t exist.” Of course, I don’t see what that concession gets you. You got people to admit that they can’t prove an extraordinary negative? That’s just admitting the ordinary, per the common rules of logic and reason. There’s no “A-HA!” there.
  21. We can't come up with a way to harness that energy. Harnessing energy is a function of physics. So, yes, the laws of physics as we know them DO stand in the way of your hypothesis. Maybe there is some way within those laws to harness the energy that we don't know about....but until we know about it, the laws of physics are a bar. Your hypothesis depends on "we are limited, and we don't know what we don't know, and therefore EVERYTHING is possible." When you have that magic wand to wave, then there is no point in further discussion. Maybe some alien race evolved so that when they blink their right eye, they are instantly transported to any place they wish in the entire universe. I can't prove that's NOT possible, so....there you have it, aliens are among us. There's no point in having any discussion when the counterpoint is "you don't know what magic is out there, maybe it could do the things you haven't seen a way to do yet." If you accept that as true, then there are literally no limits on what hypothesis anyone can offer, and then declare as likely, because our feeble minds can't conceive of the kind of magic-physics that advanced civilizations might have mastered. This is silliness. You've crafted a construct where your hypothesis is self-proving: "I hypothesize that there are aliens, and they have technology capable of overcoming every limitation you could possibly imagine, including the technology to make sure we never get physical proof of their existence." The absence of physical evidence proves you right, per your hypothesis. And here's the thing -- you might be RIGHT. But that hypothesis is, at present, unprovable by any rules of logic. And the burden remains on the person advancing the hypothesis.
  22. "It turns out that Donald Trump is a lying charlatan who is only in it for himself!" I mean, who could have POSSIBLY discerned that before now....except a metric shitton of us who told you exactly that back in 2015? Bunch of fucking assholes who have been standing in the river the whole fucking time, just now saying "hey....this water is wet!" No fucking shit, you braindead lobotomized squid.
