Sold by who? I want it to be that way, but I think the closest we've gotten to verification are "reports" that the committee favors them... but that's it.

Yeah I agree that the materials can be found in cheaper garments, but I think we agree the quality of construction is different. Not magically light years different, but that little bit you pay more does get you a better product, better support, and supporting a company that does it right. IMHO that's a lot of bang for the buck.
Nope not true. They build their clothes to be repaired and rebuilt. I'd be willing to bet if took your housebrand stuff and carefully inspected it next to Patagonia you'd start to see a bunch of subtle differences. Patagonia wants you to have 1 jacket you love and keep forever and they do things to help you achieve that goal. Hell they will repair your Patagonia gear for life. They are just as invested in that jacket after they sell it to you as they are when it's on the rack. If they built it the cheapest way possible they'd be one the hook 10 years down the road when they have to take the jacket apart to replace a zipper. They think in the extreme longterm.

I think buying them blind and hoping they work is a bad idea. She needs to try them on (without considering how they look...good luck) and pick the pair she likes/fit best. Otherwise IMHO you're just putting chips on the roulette table and taking a spin.
I agree it was a great little movie, greatly held down by the special effects. It's basically Men in Black Away Game Edition.
Just look at 2001 Space Odyssey made in 64' vs Last Starfighter made in what 85' All I'm saying is great special effects could give that B+ film a new life.
PS I want Tarantino to re make Repo Man... it'd be fantastic
IMHO there are a lot of older classic movies that just don't age well, but I understand the nostalgia. But many of those films would be incredible with modern film making as long as the new director didn't lose his shit.
Therefore I'll restrict myself to only marginal 80's movies that could have been better with budget/production:
Weird Science
Highlander - it's aged really poorly
Last Star Fighter
Ok to re-imagine and modernize:
Strange Days
