CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk
- Dog advice – should we get one?
I pretty much know the answer to this – no, we should not – but I'm curious what people's thoughts are on dog ownership and I'd love for someone to play devil's advocate. Our family of four ( with a 2-year old and 4-year old) lives in a 2,200 sq foot house in the middle of the city. We have a fenced-in backyard and there are tons of trails and parks nearby, though the closest off-leash park is a couple of miles away. We love to go on long walks as a family and I jog as well. We would only adopt a rescue that's at least 2 years old and good with children (at least according to their foster family's description, which I realize might not be terribly accurate). In non-pandemic times, we both work outside the home, though I work from home at least once a week. Are there any dogs that are actually okay by themselves, or is every dog going to be generally miserable living in solidarity for 40 or so hours/week? Does having small children make it a non-starter? I'll hang up and listen.- Voter Suppression
In a week or so, we'll have a good idea of how much the forced in-person voting exacerbated the spread of COVID-19. In Milwaukee, there were only 5 polling places open and over 18k votes were cast.- 2020 Senate Elections
I really, really wish Ron Johnson's seat was in play this November. He's an absolute shithead of the highest order and will almost certainly be voted out when he's up for re-election.- Justin Amash: Independent
Amash running as an independent would be monumentally stupid if his goal is to rid the country of the cancer currently occupying the White House. I can't imagine he's actually considering it, more likely just him stroking his own ego.- Voter Suppression
Hell yes. Worth noting that two other Scott Walker judicial appointees got clobbered by 20+ points in their races.- Things seem to be going quite well for Joe Biden
As a Bernie supporter, let me tell you, I could not be more excited about M4AP≥60 or means testing for student debt forgiveness.- Voter Suppression
Yeah, I live in Milwaukee. As for the results, it's obviously hard to predict right now but I think most people on the left are pessimistic about the Supreme Court race, if only because they think turnout is low. Now, if it's low across the board then perhaps there should be some optimism, as it would make sense that the left is more energized in this particular moment. I think there were a lot of people who specifically went out to vote in order to give the GOP the middle finger. The Supreme Court race was the only race of any consequence, statewide, but there were a few referendums and other judicial races that got people out to vote in Milwaukee. The last Supreme Court race, last Spring, was decided by less than 6,000 votes. In this race, it was a Walker appointee (Dan Kelly) vs. a progressive from Madison (Jill Karofsky).- Voter Suppression
Vote-by-mail absolutely must happen, starting with November's election.- Voter Suppression
Everyone who is outraged by this disgusting GOP voter suppression, please call your representatives and demand that voting-by-mail is included in the next stimulus package.- Voter Suppression
Thread of the voter suppression in progress in Wisconsin:- Voter Suppression
In the state legislature races in 2018, Dems won 53% of the vote while Republicans got 45% but because the GOP gerrymandered the state so horrifically, Republicans hold 63 seats to the Dems' 36 seats. This isn't a question of simply being able to vote them out. This is like playing hockey against a team wearing skates while you're wearing slippers. It feels like I have to root for a massive flare-up of coronavirus across the state to show anyone who votes Republican what a bunch of blood-stained ghouls the GOP is by forcing an election in the midst of a goddamn pandemic. My blood is fucking boiling right now and I'm ready to get out my pitchfork.- Voter Suppression
290,000 registered voters in the city of Milwaukee.- Voter Suppression
I honestly didn't think he had it in him but brav-fucking-o to Tony.- Voter Suppression
So Wisconsin, one of the bastions of voter suppression and gerrymandering, is still holding its primary/election on Tuesday, despite the very serious health risks posed by doing so. Milwaukee, which normally has 180 polling places, has been reduced to 5; it will be an absolute nightmare at those locations. Governor Tony Evers (D) has repeatedly called for the (gerrymandered AF) Republican legislature to postpone and mail every registered voter a ballot. Naturally, the pigfucks are doing everything they can to stop this from happening, including ignoring a special session called by Evers yesterday afternoon. Every major public health official and 10 mayors throughout the state have called for the election to be postponed and done by mail. From what I gather Evers is able to postpone the election via emergency powers, but he hasn't yet. I know for certain that the Dep of Health Secretary can use emergency powers to stop in-person voting, and maybe that's what Evers is angling for. Either way, it is extremely fucked up that the Wisconsin GOP is blatantly jeopardizing public health because they know that low turnout favors them. (There's a WI Supreme Court seat on the ballot.)- CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk

Gonna catch up on my reading! Oh right, I'm actually going to just scroll through this website and Twitter while trying to keep two little kids who are home from school at bay.- Corona Virus Silver Lining thread to feel less shit-tastic

Last night Fred Hoiberg left Nebraska's game after being visibly ill and was tested at a hospital. Apparently it's influenza A but it just shows that even people with coronavirus symptoms are reluctant to take the necessary steps for prevention. The NCAA is a horrific organization so I assume they'll hold out as long as they can, but there's no way the tournament happens.- Formerly DT: COVID-19 - Featuring Lots of Politics, now CR because political talk not going away
Ran to Whole Foods last night and bought a shit ton of dry beans and the last of the basmati rice. Spent the day stirring a double batch of red beans & rice. Not sure I have enough tequila on hand though.- Katie Porter is a very bright woman
Not a bad shout tbh- EPL 2019-20
That makes the most sense, especially considering that the first match of the Euros is supposed to be in...Rome.- Let’s talk about 6 baby, Let’s talk about 2019-2020 LFC
Who's first off the bench if we need a goal? Origi, I guess, but you could make a case for Minamino as well. I would've thought Milner gets the start with Ox as the attacking substitution but I like that we're going for it from the beginning. Bit worrying that Naby isn't even on the bench. - Dog advice – should we get one?
