Anyone familiar with the in person/online meeting with a Stanford Alum? Daughter marked that she would be willing to do that in her application and a local alum emailed her about setting up a meeting. Seems like that's a good sign she's actually being considered although no official acceptance at this point. It doesn't seem as though any other schools actually did that, so wondering if that's a good sign for acceptance or just standard operating procedure.
Daughter is currently ranked No 1 in her class (along with many others who have perfect GPAs) and was deferred. It probably wasn't number 1 on her list to begin with but it is probably out of the running now. It's a really bad look to send out a date you will let kids know and then not actually let them know. I'm guessing the deferred is to give them more time to determine whether they get into the college of their choice, but it could just be incompetence. I'm holding out hope she gets one of her first choices even though I'll end up paying the price with crazy tuition (Stanford/UCSD/UCSB). She's also gotten accepted to several other good schools in their honors programs, so she's going to be in a great situation regardless. But it's a stressful time for kids and UT needs to be better. Although with the new leadership I'm not really wanting her to end up there.
Jonathan's the Rub on Memorial is always really good. There a new place called The Henry that I have not been to but might fit the bill. Union Kitchen is fine and probably easy to get a reservation. Nothing special but usually decent. Service is typically friendly but a little slow but if you aren't in a hurry it's fine. Churrascos is old school but still has good food.
My daughter was there for the tournament. Unfortunately I had to work and couldn't make it. They were a little up and down. Only a few of them play club so they usually start show and improve over the season. Congratulations man, that's awesome!
My new favorites. Not sure if you can order it but it's available at the Memorial Villages Farmers Market in Houston. I need to try the rest. Absolutely great flavor, up front heat but not enough to drown out the flavor. If you want super hot, these aren't for you, but if you prefer flavor, then these are killer. Apparently he was a James Beard semifinalist.
What's the best place to hit in Austin for BBQ for lunch tomorrow. Going with some friends from out of town so also don't want to sit in an hour+ long line.
For super cheap, check out Sheffield. Really nice looking watches for around $200 with mechanical movements. https://sheffieldwatches.com/products/allsport-1-auto
New Formex Stratos completely surprised me as well. Probably my favorite watch of either event. I didn't get good photos but it's incredible in person.
SēL Instrument Watches. Just incredible engineering. Hopefully if you went to Hours + Minutes, you stopped by and talked with Andrew. Not sure there a better engineered watch out there. Seriously, badass. The Omni Diver MkII is pretty giant at 46mm, but is tested to 10,000 meters. The new Xos 42 is a more manageable size at 42mm, and probably the one I'll end up getting. The FTX field watch is great as well, but that Xos has my name on it.
Probably on the edge of affordable at any 1k, but I REALLY like these Lōci Pacific Coast Highway. They also have a quartz version for cheaper. I think I like the blue Monterey Bay and the black Big Sur the best.
