a)none of them were 50+ when they made their name coaching, b)i specified that i was referring to coaches between the ages of ~35-50, and c)i literally put “youth movement” in quotes. not sure what you’re disagreeing with here.
for me i just feel safer with a more “traditional” or obviously great offense than i do with one that can’t rely on solid shooting. although i will say that it probably doesn’t matter this year as we all know that this isn’t a top 5-10 team that’s vying for the title, but more of a team where a S16 appearance would be just awesome. as barnes and sampson have most notably shown, using offensive rebounds > great shooting can be a really good way to win 20, 25, even 30 games, but it’s a really tough way to win six in a row in the tourney. so it’s really more of a tourney handicap than anything. it can knock you down a round or two where great shooting can do the opposite.
exactly. the formula is points per 100 possessions, weighted for sos. kelvin sampson usually has a very highly rated offense due to his teams’ ability to turn offensive boards into points. we don’t get those boards quite as often as houston does, but we get to the line a ton and we’ve been shooting it really well there, so our points per 100 possessions is still quite high despite us not being a great shooting team. edited to add: which is part of what makes us resemble a tom penders team: if we do shoot the ball well on a given night we can beat a lot of teams. i’ve seen a few metrics that have placed us in the “dangerous tourney team” category because of this. we can defintely win a game or two in march vs a “better” team if we’re hitting shots.
that’s probably true. i have been known to dabble in hyperbole a bit lol. also easier for me to say right now when im a fan of sark and where our football program currently is.
i would say that this offense is about on par with the one that beard left behind for terry. iirc that offense was ~no.7-8 in kenpom when beard got canned. edit: ha. i just went and looked up the game vs gonzaga, and as you can see our Ortg for tha game was 1.26, which is essentially identical to our current 126.1 Ortg for this team.
it’s not. it’s a highly rated offense because we get a ton of offensive rebounds and we shoot a ton of FTs (and in conference play were shooting 79.5% as a team). in reality this is not sole great offensive team, it’s an effective offensive team with some glaring holes. it’s still extremely impressive to have our AdjO be where it is, so i’m not trying to downplay the job miller has done with our offense. that said i think we’d all rather have an offense with a true floor leader surrounded by 2-3 capable shooters than one based on rebounds and FTs, and i’m hoping that’s what we see in the near future.
we handle business against lsu and ou and i think we’re in, even assuming we go 0-1 in the league tourney. we handle business vs those two and win any of the a&m, uga, and conference tourney games and we’re a lock with a chance to get a 7 seed and avoid someone like michigan or arizona in round 2.
and ftr i’ve praised sean miller plenty (almost exclusively?) since the start of this thread. i just don’t appreciate the insults and the making it personal, especially from those who only chime in to talk shit. i’ve been the first one to come in here and show support for the clear and obvious positive changes that miller has made, and i clearly support him. just don’t like it nor do i seethe point in making this shit personal.
