  1. Right, the messaging isn't hard or complicated. Just constantly run ads of "Do you actually like your insurance company? When was the last time you trusted them to actually cover you if you needed medical care?" Regular people don't trust insurance companies, they just are scared of not having insurance.
  2. Not sure when you were last down there, but compared to when I was a kid they've pumped money into trying to make downtown somewhat livable with a little bit of a scene, they've spent a ton of money on trying to build out cyber-security center that works with Augusta University. The problem is that people, especially young people, aren't really moving to the Augusta metro and instead going to Atlanta and other nearby areas.
  3. Pretty sure you're talking about Chattanooga. I was just up there for a small tech conference and was very impressed with the scene, it shocked me. Very old brick buildings being nicely repurposed for new shops, companies, and restaurants. This fits right in with what @Celery Man posted about mid-sized cities attracting millennials seeking home ownership that isn't grotesquely expensive for first-time home buyers. My hometown of Augusta, GA is desperately trying to do the same but isn't have as much success. http://www.chattanooga.gov/it/nooganet/nooga-net-guest-wifi-access
  4. GOP: All newborns will be immediately aborted!!!
  5. Yeah, waiting for Nate Cohn to tweet again, but Wasserman does this for a living and I'd be shocked if he got it wrong.
  6. GOP is hopefully fucked either way. If they continue to suck Trump's dick then they'll lose the suburbs, if they try to distance themselves and entertain ideas of removing him from office then they'll lose their inbred moron base.
  7. Kentucky has had several Democratic governors though so it's not too shocking to me, but the margins that Bevin won by in 2015 being completely flipped in the suburbs and even rural areas should hopefully give McConnell a fatal heart attack.
  8. Typed that wrong, it was called for the Democrat Beshear
  9. Race has been called for Beshear!
  10. You are completely overestimating this shit, people may be scared of change because they think everything is going to collapse but no one I know likes their insurance company. Almost everyone who has had any kind of extenuating circumstance beyond going to a PCP has an awful story about dealing with their provider. The sooner private health insurance companies lose virtually all of their power, the better, and so many of us aren't afraid of what will happen or how much private specialty groups will lose. https://www.modernhealthcare.com/article/20180625/NEWS/180629957/fragmented-markets-inflate-healthcare-spending
  11. Yeah I'm struggling to rationalize how everyone can just magically save 10%. Do you know how many people are living paycheck to paycheck and just how much student debt Millennials and soon Zoomers will own?? This is leading down to some libertarian "what happened to personal responsibility" level of argument.
  12. Not sure how this will turn out, but even as a 10 year old I remember the craziness of this event since my Dad is from Atlanta and was so damn proud when they were awarded the Olympics. It seemed like overnight Jewell was being accused of planting the bomb after being hailed as a hero, I was struggling to wrap my head around why someone would do such a thing.
  13. taking it to the other thread
  14. Just scares ya to death that these kids can't tackle anymore.
  15. Love Michael Brooks
  16. This swing of the pendulum has been building since Reagan.
  17. Look at the second article, you are straight up using an argument that pharmaceutical companies have put out to scare people into not supporting government run healthcare. I don't even know if there's any one study that gives you a nice number of how much money is wasted researching dead-end drugs, but I sure as hell am not going to trust a pharma company to give me an accurate number. I'm also not about to really have sympathy for pharmaceutical company execs that knowingly contributed to the opioid crisis while making record profits. They can threaten to take their ball and go home, I'm sure they'll just intentionally grind research to a halt.
  18. You realize that so much of drug research is already heavily subsidized by our government right? https://abcnews.go.com/WNT/YourMoney/story?id=129651 https://www.healthaffairs.org/do/10.1377/hblog20170602.060376/full/

He could also be getting a government sponsored free or cheap cell phone plan. It really doesn't matter anyways, you cannot fucking function in today's society without a phone. How many functioning payphones have you seen lately?

You heard it folks, if you have a smartphone then you shouldn't be homeless. That is some Ronald Reagan esque garbage criticism.
  21. I think whether it's Bernie's tax for everyone or Warren's plan to go through employers, fundamental change in thinking will occur as Boomers retire, get on government healthcare, and the rest of us continue to get fed up with insurance companies that do nothing but try to deny to pay for your care whenever you have anything more complicated than a simple prescription written. Also, completely agree with wages. I'm paid 120k in doing web and backend development because I was primarily the only one working on this project with the company at a consulting shop before they hired me directly (much cheaper). I am totally fine if I have to pay another several thousand in taxes if it means we get universal healthcare (I don't want to ever have to deal with an insurance company for the rest of my life), cheaper or free public college, better public transit, etc.
  22. Maybe, that's definitely something I'm seeing now that people are worried about. Maybe a silver-lining would be that American workers finally start to realize how much power they should have in the workplace and call this bluff. It's probably more likely there would be a ton of salary changes.

Getting them stabilized is the most important step, specifically with housing. There's been research lately that shows people can get back on their feet a lot quicker when they don't have to worry about housing, even if they're battling addiction and metal issues.
