Sensible suspicions. The reason they couldnt have just merked him was that Baelor recognized his knighthood, which therefore makes him a part of (lower) nobility and granted him fair due process. Would’ve been like the Saudis killing a US congressman from bumfuck district. Primary risk of death was only to the 2 main combatants, and in this case Dunk owing to skillset/experience. Most expected him to yield or be killed early. Lyonel joined only to have some “fun”—not much different than volunteering for a joust. The other ones a mix of a sense of duty/chivalry, religious faith (the right side survives), and a chance for revenge. One of dunk’s party got embarassed by Aerion in the tourney.
That's entirely the point of armor. IRL, knights rarely got killed from direct combat strikes. They'd engage in crude hack and slash until they were downed, and pierced in points of weaknesses like the armpit or neckline. The rest died later from injuries. Dunk didn't take fatal blows. There were concussive shots to armor. Chainmail kept the stabs from penetrating deep. The worst shot in the fight was near Aerion's arteries. And he's the toughest dude in the fictitious world with dragons. Here's a tough dude in a world without dragons:
A contributing factor to Baelors death was wearing a helmet that was too small, borrowed from his son. A properly sized helmet might have dampened the hit. Baelor didnt bring his own armor because he never intended to enter the tournament. Egg is too far down in the succession line for that to have been considered. Part of why his dad Maekar was a sourpuss is because he himself was already too far down. This is why Egg’s brother was sent to the Citadel. And why Egg was allowed to squire is for the formal promotion to eventual knighthood. It shouldve been with his other brother, whos a coward drunkard, so why not an “honorable” knight instead.
Having everything integrated into a single large, heavy, expensive mattress is dumb. Get a bed system with separate frame, slats, and a simpler thinner mattress on top. The slats provide all the support function of the springs — and can be customized slat by slat and side by side. This allows the mattress to be have just the supple support function, and smaller/lighter so you can replace that wear item more often.
These are good value for this style. I have this exact one. Took me a long time to even notice that the bottom indicators are roman and the upper are arabic. https://debeerwatchbands.com/
Top 3 helms ever Funny this show goes from light-hearted and casual into full violence Dirty blood-and-guts melee was exactly how medieval combat went historically. Heavy armor and muddy battlegrounds meant sloppy slobberknockers instead of fanciful swordsmanship shown on GoT
Emergency Awesome is really in-depth for SOIAF productions. I expected to learn something cool about the horseman carrying that bodybag that Rafe and Dunk hid from along the road. Turns out its anonymous and the 2 sigils we saw were non-descript.
watching tons of carpentry and woodworking and diy videos and the gerund terminologies kinda weird me out. for example they call things like footing and sheathing and siding and decking, when it could just be the foot and sheath and the deck. “we’ll install the sheath on this wall” theres probably a legit reason for them but they still sound weird to my ears.
I want to keep a constant supply of basil, possibly other herbs too. Are these Chynese indoor LED-powered grow boxes worth a shit, or are they just gimmicks? Can't grow them outdoors because of serious winters where I live. (10*F outside right now). I might do a greenhouse thingy but that's a later project.
Anyone remember that the mp3 pirating software Napster had a direct messaging functionality? I was just a teenager downloading some shit on it and—i forgot exactly what and how it started— I found myself chatting with a young woman in Northern Ireland. It was a genuinely innocuous and warm conversation and at some point she started telling me about all the bombings and political violence around where she lived. Coming from public schools and having barely passed puberty, I had no fucking idea there was an actual ongoing WAR in “Ireland” of all places. (now I know they had just completed the Good Friday Agreement but still had occasional clashes years after). I thought “Ireland” was all sheep and crumpets and tea. I was half convinced she was yanking my leg. The chat ended some point later. Despite the slightly grim turn it was overall a really pleasant conversation. And being my first with a foreigner maybe (?), it stuck in my mind. Once in a while, like when I hear a Zombies song, that chat pops back in my head. I kinda wonder who she was and where is she now, and imagine if we met as adults would she remember, once upon a time early in both of our internet experiences, typing on a keyboard to some young kid in America (i dont think I told her my age??) who was completely incredulous at what was going in her country.
