RIP Charlie Robison???
Rich Brotherton and Mark Patterson played with Bruce and also with REK. I can't imagine a nicer pair of guys than those to. Usually, it's the bass and drummers who are buddies but the team work between Rich and Mark was incredible.

RIP Charlie Robison???
May have told this story before. I've known Bruce since he played basketball at WT in the early 80s. He and my brother were running buddies. First time I met him, this tall dude kicks in the door of my brothers apartment playing air guitar to the Hoodoo Gurus, "Bittersweet". Anyway, in 2000 Bruce, Charlie and Jack Ingram were touring together (they made the live Unleashed album from that tour) so I met up with Bruce at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA to have dinner and catch up. That was the first time I met Charlie. We were sitting at the bar and Bruce was looking through some pictures in my wallet of me kids. He showed them to Charlie. When I got my wallet back, all of my check cards and cash were gone. The look on his face was the best part. Then he just kind of shrugged and gave it all back to me. When each guy was playing their set, the other two sat at the table with me. It was a really cool night, listening to two great songwriters talk about the other one while he was playing. They each had a band with them....some members were common between all 3. Listening to Jack talk about the musicianship of certain guys was really cool. At the end of night, I was having some cocktails with Mark Patterson who had been playing drums for Charlie. I've known Mark for a while since his time with Robert Earl Keen and told him what Jack said about him. He was deeply touched what Jack said about his drumming. Just a cool night. After that night, I told a buddy of mine that Charlie was the guy you wanted planning your bachelor party and Bruce was the guy you wanted as your next door neighbor for life.

This is the new song McMurtry is doing as his encore. Pinocchio in Vegas. About as autobiographical one we will ever get from him.....and him acknowledge such.

Listening to the studio version, I never really paid attention to the meaning of the song, but when he did it this way live, it shot me in the soul. To me, he is the best songwriter, ever. How can you take that story and make it that powerful without saying, outright, what was happening?

I found a good version of how McMurtry is doing "Blackberry Winter" at his shows now. No mic, out if front of the monitors..... Holy fuck. What a song. I liked the studio version, especially Grissom's killer acoustic solo but this version....... Just kills me.

I didn't know she split off from that dude who used to play with her. Saw her open for someone a few years ago and really liked her.

It is really cool. They are doing a great job there are are super nice. Plus, you can go right down the street to Taqueria del Sol afterwards. I was bummed when Showcase Photo closed but swapping that for a kickass music store was a win.

Opening acts better than the headliner...
TVZ and Cowboy Junkies were one that I would call a draw when I saw them. Townes was actually in decent form when I saw them in Birmingham, plus the outdoor venue right by the tracks just added to the atmosphere. Seen REM multiple times....only opener I remember was Fetchin' Bones. They kicked ass but this was on the "Lifes Rich Pageant" tour and REM was hitting their stride at that point.

Opening acts better than the headliner...
I won a bunch of tickets to see Scandal and John Waite at Reunion around 84. They were taking turns opening and this night, Scandal opened. Scandal had a guest guitarist come on stage for the last two songs......dude had a red/black/white Kramer, just like EVH....who the fuck would do that....then he starts playing and you realize it WAS Eddie. It was right after he got his haircut so you really couldn't tell who it was at first. Gotta say the opener won that night.

Caught McMurtry in Archer City last weekend with his full band. Fantastic show. Played a great new song in his encore with Betty Soo. The song started off talking about Pinocchio and Geppetto but as all McMurtry songs so, it quickly morphs. I had never been to a show at the sight of the old Royal Theater. They have done a really good job of setting up the room next to the bombed out shell of old theater. Song and lighting were fantastic.

The D-18 from AUTF Guitar Emporium sounds incredible. Honestly don't know how I've lived this long without owning one. I brought my Taylor with me out here and will probably just leave it here. With that cedar top and smaller body, it just has no low end. But for me, that D-18 really shines in the middle. Could not be happier. (edited: Damn, that Taylor looks funny in that picture.) And I have these two for a bonus.

NGD yesterday, straight from AUTF Guitar Emporium. Since it shipped from 68 degree, wet SF to 111-ty dry AG bumfuck TX, I'm letting it sit on the case for a couple of days. AUTF even included a set of strings. No candy. UPS guy was begging me to open it so he could look at it. And yes, that is what you call a phone book on the table. Covers 26 towns in the hell of earth.

And sorry, but Crowded House does NOT belong on ANY girly list.

More like at wallet point, by the record label. I know a guy who was in a band with Doug prior to him starting the Gin Blossoms. Really, really sad story.

One signal that screams you won’t like this person
guys who constantly replay their latest golf round/poker game in excruciating detail. Same for their fantasy team. As far as vocal fry: Just for fun on the beard as personality post above. Loudermilk solved all kinds of problems.

I can never remember the numbers for Gretsch guitars. Had to look it up. It is the Streamliner (cheapest of their lines) but it doesn't have that on the on the truss rod cover. They went a little overboard with the name on this one, even after the numbers. Sticker says Made in Indonesia. Gretsch G2215-P90 Streamliner Junior Jet Club Weighs 8 lbs. I mentioned the nut was smaller than my other guitars, but apparently it is the same as my big hollowbody Gretsch and actually a bit bigger than my tele. I guess the skinnier neck makes if feel smaller. I can't get over how good the P90 in the neck sounds.
