And one other thing, besides trying to dry up the jobs here by hammering companies knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, is working on improving at least some of the conditions in the home countries of those coming here. We do that through soft power, such as USAID, etc. and in the process, letting our capitalist side show through, we get American companies in there trying to build those places up, and providing jobs there. Improve some of those countries, you make a dent in immigration to the US. Those people aren't risking their lives because they'll make $0.50 more an hour here. Or we look at something like Rick Fucking Perry was talking about in the summer of 2001 when he gave a speech down at the border (with the Mexican President in attendance) about a pseudo-open border between Texas and Mexico, with a shared healthcare and education system. He talked about creating an "economic zone" of sorts where people could freely move around the border region, and companies would want to come in and invest because there would be a really large labor pool in a secure area. I have no doubt that some wealthy donors/companies came up with the plan because you'd be getting cheap labor ostensibly within the framework of US stability, but he was out there promoting it. Instead, we'll catch people, haul them back south of the border, and then have to catch them again 6 months or a year or two down the road.
