I had to dig around my photo library of one of the greatest breakfasts I’ve ever eaten in Carmel, CA. The restaurant called Em Le’s is closed now but I believe owners have reopened under different name, which I’m not sure - Eggs Benedict over corned beef hash. It deserved to have iconic sunbeams and shit radiating from this masterpiece:
Monterrey Peninsula is strong in the breakfast game.
Gold!
”Those are some of the biggest pricks on Earth. The fact that they work there I mean that they are relatively disgusting people. They’re the type that aspire to be dog catchers are something like that.”
Agreed. This one hits hard. Never met Mike Leach but I loved the guy. A real person came through, loud and clear.
RIP Pirate. You brought a lot of life - to life.
Didn’t know if the fly fishers on this thread had heard the news but we lost one of the greats of the sport Thanksgiving night, Dave Whitlock passed from a stroke. Dave was the consummate gentleman, one of the most talented people I’ve met in life - art, science, writing, fly design - you name it.
For the fly fishers, thought you all would enjoy these videos - Kelly Bostian, the former outdoor writer for the Tulsa World, spent a day with Dave at his home in Eastern Oklahoma a couple of years ago. He did an original video on Dave instructing proper roll casts:

He released two additional videos recently. The first is Dave going through an excellent breakdown of a four-part fly cast ( Dave catches a huge rainbow from his spring-fed pond at end of the video):

The third is Dave going through his fly boxes talking about his favorite flies for fishing in Oklahoma:

Hope you all enjoy. I learned a couple of new things from the master. RIP Dave. One of the very best of the good guys.
Amen. Forget those MFf’in peas.
Let’s get this back on track…anyone ever been to Iredell Cafe in Iredell, TX? My buddy in Hamilton swears it’s some of best catfish in Texas.
The menu looks extremely legit old school cafe.
I’m putting this on itinerary on my next trip down Hwy. 281 area.
Alright boys and girls. I couldn’t find an appropriate topic in short order and created this one pertaining to some old school American meals or restaurants. I apologize in advance if there was a topic already created but I’m three drinks in on the patio after whirlwind business travel for last month.
Every small town in Texas and Oklahoma had a damn good cafe that served Old School American dishes. Seems like a dying breed these days. There still are some great ones but not as many as when I was a kid.
To start off, here’s Salisbury Steak with Onions. The recipe I’ve used for several years is Ree Drummond’s Salisbury Steak (I’ve tried some of her other recipes and wasn’t wowed but this one has been a staple for several years). Highly recommend:

Talk about the perfect meal for deer lease or camping. Cooking outside always makes a better meal.
I wish you all could have smelled this stage:
I wanted green beans with a shit ton of bacon but my wife begged that idea. Oh well…Snow peas it is…
Photo of me at Texas deer camps across the state these last thirty years:
This is same situation in eastern Oklahoma. Worse when I hunt out by Ponca City on the Salt Fork River. The deer have soybeans, milo, corn, and winter wheat for miles and miles. They look at a feeder and scowl “poor peasant”. Muy grandes out there though…
Leftover turkey and andouille sausage gumbo went down tonight. Roux was dark but broth lightened it up more than I would have thought. Still damn good.
Mine is the old Sub-MOA Vanguard.
I walked in to Sportsman’s Warehouse up in Round Rock in 2008 or so, when they were closing. Completely unplanned but best gun purchase I’ve ever made.
I’ve got a decent scope but I should upgrade to some really nice glass as it’s all I shoot now. I’ve got multiple .308s, Sako .270, .243, and others but Vanguard .257 is my go-to.
First time hunting back in Oklahoma in about a decade in one of my old spots. No bueno last night but beautiful evening hunting around the shores of Lake Tenkiller.
That’s a bummer if the 1178 is discontinued. I’ll check with the Red Wing store near my house in Tulsa and see if they know anything. I still got a couple of pairs but one is in dire need of resole as well.
I buy mine at whatever local grocery that specializes in Hispanic foods. In Austin, El Rancho Mercado had excellent selection. Morelos, Fiesta, others should have everything you need.
