MMMMMMMM.....QUESO......
I didn’t know where to share this masterpiece Chihuahua Queso Flameado from Tacos y Mezcal here in Tulsa (yes…I know we need more chips…). marg game not bad either. Jamaica marg my wife was drinking: Friday happy hour crowd in T-town is non-existent though. My fellow okies haven’t figured out their Friday afternoon patio game on an absolutely perfect spring day.

Definitely plan on a day in Balmorhea. I love and miss this part of the world. So many good times out there.

Far flung and/or remote globe trotters
My experience is very similar, plus a three week honeymoon to Fiji. I always wanted to travel more but my folks didn’t have the means and I’ve worked far more than I needed to in life. My mistake… Patagonia is highest on my list. I’d love to return to South Pacific for another long stay. I did a lot of consulting work early in my career and had a client who’d been all over the world doing aviation work. I asked him what was his favorite of all his travels everywhere and his answer surprised me - Norway. He said it was the most beautiful place and he loved the obscure coastal villages he stayed. Another friend who’s been about a hundred countries, said parts of Turkey were his favorites. My wife has traveled throughout Europe, living in Spain for a year. She definitely wants to return to Spain and Italy.

2022-2023 Hunting Thread
Speaking of deer organs, I have an old story to share… My first buck was a little six point I shot down in the Ozark hills south of Locust Grove, OK. I shot the deer and he ran downhill towards where my dad was sitting. It was a really dry Fall and the reason I saw the deer is I heard him walking up the side of the hill in the dry leaves. He sounded like an elephant racing back downhill with a .30-.30 150 grain in him. My dad found the deer and waved me over to field dress the deer. We were both bent over gutting the little buck, when out of no where, this old man is standing next to us. We both kind of jumped as we never heard him coming whatsoever. The old dude is dressed in dirty overalls that look like they belonged on Pea Eye from Lonesome Dove (literally looked like he walked out of the 1870s). Old man says “ya gonna eat that liver?”. My dad and I were still somewhat stunned by his appearance and said no, that he could have it. Old man bends over and picks up the bloody deer liver and sticks the son-of-a-bitch in his coat pocket and walks off silently. Weird as shit deal. My dad turned to me and said “I think that fucker was a damn ghost”. 🤣

My wife made these two recipes yesterday for a small family get together. The Guinness Beef Stew was easily the best I’ve ever had and Cheddar Scones were damn good (only scones I’ve had in the past were dry as a rock but these are more akin to cheddar biscuits): https://www.thekitchn.com/guinness-beef-stew-recipe-23281065 https://www.cuisineathome.com/recipes/side-dishes/mini-cheddar-scones/

Oklahoma smallmouth bass country. Fishing was slow (no smallmouth but a few spots and LMB). Tent camping on top of a mountain in high winds. However, good scenery, new stream access points found for warmer weather, and fun times with the kid.

I’m not that familiar with Winter Park but have fished the Colorado west of Granby and the Blue below Silverthorn. Both are excellent winter fisheries, especially the Blue. Winter Park is about equidistant to both of those streams but two passes to navigate to the Blue. I’ll let Colorado dudes chime in for better intel.- Markets still falling like whoa
Not fun and not something I wish on anyone. ACH clearings, payrolls, cash for other debt obligation payments… This one will have a lot of tentacles if a buyer doesn’t step in. I bet someone will over the weekend.- Markets still falling like whoa

Fantastic Spring Break with my kids in 2016. Both were in elementary school at the time and summited Guadalupe Peak like champs. Mom and Dad were ass whipped tired but kids are troopers. Highly recommend it! On the trail down from the summit:- Fishing Megathread: Looking For Big Girls Who swallow
I snuck out Monday evening to a small lake outside of Tulsa to see if I could catch anything. I threw a spinner bait to start off with with no takers, switched to my fly rod throwing streamers…nothing. I was about to call it a day but decided to try a dragonfly nymph under an indicator and immediately started getting bites. Turned in to a fun evening:- Cheese Enchiladas

Outstanding Sbbruin! My wife and I honeymooned on several different islands in Fiji almost twenty years ago. I’ve wanted to go to the Marquesas since I spoke to a dude in Fiji that had spent the last five years sailing around the world. I asked him what the most beautiful place he’d ever visited and without blinking an eye he said “Marquesas “. Here’s a pic of the island in Fiji, Namenalala, where my bride and I met the sailing dude:- Fishing Megathread: Looking For Big Girls Who swallow
Upper Illinois River and a tributary. When I grew up in Tulsa, 30+ years ago we always had native smallmouth in the Illinois but a big fish was as 3 lbs. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife stocked Lake Tenkiller (which Illinois River feeds) with Tennessee-strain smallmouth in early nineties. Those Tennessee-strain fish have migrated up the Illinois and those fish are huge. Legit 7 lb.+ smallmouth are abundant now both in the lake and tributaries. Below is not my fish/photo but one shared on a guide’s website that was caught recently:- Fishing Megathread: Looking For Big Girls Who swallow
Took the kid on a recon trip yesterday to the Oklahoma Ozarks. We were definitely pushing the season but the smallmouth are starting to get active. He lost a nice two pound fish right at the bank. White bass will be running soon as well. Okie smallmouth water:- Surly official camping and backpacking thread
I wouldn’t recommend the big canvas tents due to weight. They are fantastic for week-long elk hunting trips to the Rockies where you’re likely to get some snow but will not be practical for Texas or anywhere in summer. The weight and beating or setting it up will make you hate camping. I’d recommend an REI membership as their warranty program is outstanding and they carry excellent brands. Depending on your family’s size, here are two car camping options Big Agnes that are well made and relatively light: 4 person: https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/product/222999/big-agnes-bunk-house-4-tent 6-person: https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/product/222994/big-agnes-big-house-6-tent Biggest suggestion I can make is buying a couple of these stackable storage boxes from Academy. Pack your tent, sleeping pads, pillows, and sleeping bags in one and then all your cooking, chairs, tables, miscellaneous in another. You’ll go camping twice as much if you can grab and go and take all the ass beating out of it. https://www.academy.com/p/plano®-storage-locker- Chili w/o beans
