Texas Baseball 2025 - Your SEC regular season champions!!
Seems like a 100% chance DBU, TCU or UTSA will be our 2 based on the way things currently look. The selection committee will like the TCU angle but they may end up hosting if they finish strong so maybe that is a potential Supers matchup.

I completely forgot the UTRGV game last year was started on the mound by one Jared Thomas. Dark times.

Point remains, give me 4-5 really good pitchers on a staff over having 7-8 decent pitchers but no single guy or two you would consider “lockdown”. The postseason format is designed in a way that you really only need like 2 real starters and 2-3 relievers to make a run. Having a bullpen that is 6 guys deep sounds great on paper but if you are having to go 6 guys deep in your bullpen in the postseason you are probably in trouble anyway. That 2021 Mississippi State team had Bednar, Sims and a bunch of guys who are probably already working desk jobs. A&M last year was Prager, Aschenbeck and Cortez basically carrying them the whole way, especially after Sdao went down. It’s more likely we are let down by the offense at some point than not having enough arms in the bullpen, based on what we’ve seen up to this point.

If you are referencing 2022, that team was sent home before they even unpacked their bags. If I remember right, we scored like 4 combined runs in two games and both games were over by like the 5th inning. Every part of the team sucked for those 3 days. I do hear what you are saying. The emergence of Moffett and Saunier will help us the rest of the regular season in keeping guys fresh, but once the postseason rolls around we are going to run Spencer, Harrison, Grubbs, Dre, Riojas and Volantis into the ground. Other guys will only be used in emergencies or if things get really wild. If Sunday was a regional game, there is a 100% chance Volantis would have been used for a third straight day or Grubbs would have been brought back after 66 pitches on Friday over Saunier.

They both don't deserve to play. Winfield doesn't hit or get on base. Duplantier doesn't hit and gets on base at a rate a little higher than Winfield. Neither are good defensively. Matt Scott must not be hitting well in the midweek sim games to not be given a shot at this point. I've maintained all along I don't think he is playing meaningful innings for us this year, but with how bad the production has been in LF maybe they throw Jonah Williams a bone in one of these midweek games coming up.

Hard to go 10 weeks in this league without a series or two that will leave you shaking your head at the end, and it is typically a road series like this. I’m certainly not throwing in the towel by any means, but we are up against it today with the state of our pitching staff behind Ruger going up against their best starter. We pushed almost all our chips in yesterday (rightfully so). Styles make fights and Kentucky has a style that is bush league but also keeps them in pretty much any game/series. That stat yesterday about them holding a lead in all 14 conference games they’ve played despite being 6-8 was wild.

This is college baseball. The pitchers can’t throw strikes half the time and a ground ball to the third baseman is never automatic. Routinely giving up outs has been analytically proven to lower win odds. I don’t want to know how many runs we left out there the last two years watching Peyton Powell sac bunt in the 6th inning or earlier.

Trying to bunt also cost them outs in the 8th and in the 11th that could have ended the game much earlier. No disrespect to Gus or Augie but Kentucky runs a little league offense and that will remain true whether they win this series or not. It is not sustainable for long term success.

Strikeouts are a part of this offense. Schloss has said he is willing to see more 2 strike counts in exchange for driving up pitch counts and walking more. I think our walk rate is quite a bit higher compared to last year. There are tradeoffs. I would also say that Schloss’ teams moving forward aren’t going to have black holes in the 8 and 9 spots in the order collecting K’s left and right.

Not sure what the bullpen even looks like tomorrow. Grubbs is spent. Surely they aren’t going to throw Volantis three days in a row considering how careful they’ve been with him. Maybe Dre can give you an inning or two? We are likely going to need someone unexpected to get outs like Howard or Moffett again.
