2018 San Antonio Spurs Offseason Thread -- Into the Great Unknown
Sounds like the Spurs also sent Toronto $5 million to cover Kawhi’s trade kicker. Ouch. https://mobile.twitter.com/ZachLowe_NBA/status/1019762309097549831

He’d need to get Toronto’s express permission before negotiating or signing with another team.

We'll see I guess. DeRozan isn't giving me warm fuzzies with his initial reaction, and he has a history of some reported mental instability, no? Hold on to your butts. I maintain it's shitty all around - shitty that the Spurs were forced to trade a guy who 2 years ago looked tailor made to guide the franchise in the post Duncan years. Shitty that the NBA is held hostage by guys' feelings about where they want to play or where they think they're entitled to play. Shitty that blood sucking family members take advantage, etc. etc.

I'm fine with DeRozan - I think he's about the best single player the Spurs could expect in return. I would prefer OG over the center, but that may just be preference based given the trend in the league to play position-less, switching basketball. The pick bugs me that it is top 20 protected, and I think that will come back to bite the Spurs. Also, I would rather have unloaded Pau or Patty's contracts rather than one year of very reasonable salary for Green. So, kinda shitty, kinda not? Who know ... good riddance to nephew and Uncle Protocol.

None of this is ideal but I get the sense the objective is to remain competitive while Pop is still coaching. During that time - who knows? Guys get hurt, teams implode - whatever. Take your best shot and see what happens. After that, blow it up and rebuild. This trade seems to check the boxes we’ve been lead to believe are guiding the Spurs’ decision making - top 20 player, young player, and picks (assuming this is DD, OG, and something). Interestingly, the contract expiration for DD and LMA align perfectly FWIW.

If SGA is a target, the soonest he can be traded is August 5 (+/-) ... 30 days after he signed his rookie deal. Salaries don't match up, though, with just Harris and SGA ... maybe we take back Boban as our missing (link) big man. Heh.

I'm about to force myself to take a break from closely following this nonsense. However, for my own sanity here are the key dates coming up I'm aware of: July 16 - first date designed player extension can be offered/signed July 26 - USA basketball minicamp late September - Spurs training camp October - deadline to sign DPE agreement? Feb 2019 - trade deadline Maybe this gets resolved by mid to late September? Ugh ... enough already.

I think they’ll match - almost no choice given the uncertainty with the clown show still unresolved. Wonder if they have any room to offer Smart and if they can only do one or the other. Given that choice I might let Anderson go.

I really thought we'd hear something "official" today. The barrage yesterday from Wright seemed like it was put out there according to the Spurs' blessing in order to prepare the fan base for shipping out this clown show. I never expected to witness the Spurs mutually engaging in a shit flinging show by proxy through the media ... but here we are. Strange times.

our trip to Port Royal in a few days was cancelled by the resort - rooms not ready. Bummer, but we'll be there next summer.

Surly official camping and backpacking thread
I'm making a quick trip to Taos at the end of the month. There are probably some comments in this thread but I thought I'd ask for recommendations on trails/hikes for day trips.

Interesting on Abreu. Iglesias I totally get, but wouldn’t a corner outfielder make more sense than a first baseman? Unless Abreu can play LF .....

I seem to recall some stories about LeBron's first year in Miami that he was trying to convince Riley to push out Spo and take over as HC when the Heatles struggled out of the gate. I think he would be fine with following a coach who has the rep to back up an imposition of structure.

Yep - hay crops everywhere likely to be in the crapper. Not only will yields be light, you can pile on an early start to feeding as pasture grass gets depleted with heat and no rain.
