  1. I could imagine. For maintenance, we utilize a lot of 3rd party contractors for assistance (engine, welding, DP systems, etc.). Some stuff we have our crews do but it's really just rope, soap, and dope stuff (cleaning, de-rusting, oil changes, etc.).
  2. Agree with you. Deckhands nowadays make around $60k in the US and typically work 28/14 shifts (on O&G PSVs). 35 years ago was a different animal. With the new generation (millennials - I'm one of them too), laziness is pretty standard. There are a few that bust their ass trying to move up to the wheelhouse but they're pretty rare. My company and industry specific vessels don't do union staffing. I would imagine the productivity of workers drops off significantly more if they were unionized positions though.
  3. But with that, there really is a higher quality of crew in the US for captains and engineers, on average, than the rest of the world. The whole "you get what you pay for" mantra. However, with deck crew (outside of wheelhouse and engine room departments), the work ethic of a Filipino versus a US deckhand is laughable. One Filipino can do the same work of 3 US deckhands and it's not even close. US deckhands are undeniably lazy.
  4. Definitely not uncommon at all for international companies to have this kind of operation (crewed by Indian, Philippines, Africans) and owned by a company in a different country. Only in the US does a US flagged vessel HAVE to crewed by US crewmen. Only way for a vessel to be given a US flag (to my knowledge) is for the vessel to be built in the US. The Jones Act can be a bitch to deal with but it really keeps the shipping industry isolated in the US regarding the O&G trade. Most companies operating in the GoM in oil and gas can only use US flagged vessels. Some countries require certain nationalities of crew members if you operate in and out of their ports. If my company were to have a vessel in Trinidad working for BP or whoever, they would require us to have a certain number of Trinidad crew members. Edit: Also, it's a hell of a lot cheaper for a company to utilize non-US crewmen. US crew typically make 60-70% more in wages than their counterparts from other countries due to the market for US crew (Jones Act driven). This allows companies to operate on lower day rates for their vessels in international ports.
  5. No way should this thread fall off the first page. Bump. Smoked on my UDS at 275-285 for 3 hours, wrapped in butcher paper for another 2 hours. Put in a cooler for an hour and 15 minutes.
  6. I couldn’t agree more. My goal is to be as lean as possible while being as strong as possible. Putting in to the navy method calculator, I’m 16% body fat. That’s what I figured it would be. I don’t really have much weight to lose at this point (185 or so) at 6’2” so very slow weight gain is necessary to continue to progress at the gym and get stronger.
  7. Brookshire’s is completely different from Brookshire Bros. Different company, same area though.
  8. I know HEB was very close to acquiring Brookshire’s a few years ago which would have given them a Tyler distribution center. Would be nice if they were to eventually make it to Tyler.
  9. Nice job. Consistency is key.
  10. I think it was @Errestaurants that said weight loss is 75% nutrition and 25% exercise. I’d argue that it’s more like 90/10 even. Body composition will change with the 10% over time. The key is consistency. The key to weight loss, and keeping it off, is consistency in your nutrition. For people not running gear (test, tren), bulking is an absolutely horrible idea. The human body isn’t meant to gain 25-30 pounds in 3 months time. You will reach a physiological limit on how much strength you can gain. And those extra calories become love handles and you’ll get fat. Then you’ll “cut” before you peak your strength goals and lose even more strength. The best thing I can imagine to do would be some type of “lean bulk” where you’re increasing your calories to 10% more than your TDEE. Very very slow weight gain that would allow you to progress in the gym and further your body composition goals. Throw all that out the window if you’re running gear though. Your waist will shrink, muscle will build, and you will become Hulk. Eat a shit ton of protein and clean carbs and you’ll be Zeus. Update: Squat has gone to 215x5 and bench is 175x5. Slowly getting back in to form. @South Austin I got back in to the gym about 1.5 months ago after recovering from rona. My thought is that most of the people up there aren’t wearing masks have had it anyway. If you’re vaccinated, wear a mask and go about your business. It’s more of a mind game honestly. I had a mental block where I was a bit uncomfortable but it goes away with time. I’m going 6 days a week at this point and don’t plan on stopping.
  11. My company owns and operates vessels in the GoM. 240-300ft PSVs. They're all diesel-electric with Kongsberg/Rolls Royce DP systems which is pretty standard for ships that size. No idea about any of the container ships though.
  12. Eh. I was simply pointing out the fact that there’s availability for the general population at this point. You, on the other hand, jump to conclusions about me being an asshole for making this statement. Not surprising in the least, considering your post history. Carry on.
  13. I’m 32 and don’t have any comorbidities and I’ve gotten my first one. Didn’t cut the line. Signed up for UTMB’s waitlist.
  14. That's one bad dude right there.
  15. I got a text from Houston Health Department yesterday evening asking me to schedule my first dose. Either we’ve got more supply than I thought or there are a lot of people who aren’t getting vaccinated. My wife got the same text 30 minutes later.
  16. Fuck outta here. What a god damn embarrassment.
  17. 30 hours after first Pfizer shot. Shoulder still a little sore but good to go otherwise. Got laid last night. Went to the gym and had a good workout today. Grilling tomorrow. Parents coming in to town who are both fully vaxxed tomorrow. Going to be a great weekend.
  18. Arm still really sore, more than it is whenever I get a flu shot. Still doing fine though.
  19. 1st shot done. Pfizer at UTMB at a park in Clear Lake. Well run. Was in and out in an hour or so, drive thru style. Go back in 3 weeks (4/8) for second dose at the same time, no follow up appointment required. Just go get back on line at the same time. Very smoothly run.
  20. Getting my first dose today from UTMB in Clear Lake/Webster (Houston). I'm not 1A, 1B, 1C or a teacher/school admin. Signed up for their wait list about a month or so ago and got an e-mail yesterday asking me to schedule an appointment with a direct link. I'm assuming it's leftover doses or they didn't have anyone within the categories left on wait lists so they moved to the common folk wait list. It's either Pfizer or Moderna as it's a two dose shot (per the appointment). Don't care, getting shot.
  21. Just got an e-mail from UTMB (Galveston County) asking me to schedule. Getting first dose tomorrow at 2:25 in Clear Lake. Not 1A, 1B, 1C or teacher. Leftovers I guess? Edit: I signed my wife and I up for Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, and Memorial Hermann wait lists starting a month ago or so.
  22. Yes. Daniel Figurelli, the former racist intern from PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP (PwC, LLP) located in Houston, Texas.
  23. Memorial Hermann is expanding their wait list to 18+. I signed up immediately. Gotta be a good thing in my opinion. https://secureaccess.memorialhermann.org/authenticated/COVID19Vax/HUB/PreRegistration?fbclid=IwAR0boFxVAjoEjj2wHMJJQfRPYn67la_ymGh8AOSChlYbiWnBPR3j1loldY0
  24. I deadlifted for a while about 2 years ago. I actually haven’t deadlifted since. Fear of injury and not having proper form are big factors in that decision. I can hit all of the muscles that deadlifts hit with other exercises. Granted, it takes a bit longer, but I’ll do that rather than risking injury to my back. Bent over row is the main variant for barbell row for me.
