Coach K runs a 2-4-5, not 4-2-5. Two hybrid OLBs, two ILBs. The reason ILB/OLB difference matters is that his scheme requires the OLBs to handle various responsibilities (similar to how Ossai did in his Jack role - actually there is a Jack in K's system too), while ILBs are also expected to manage a myriad of responsibilities including sealing the edge/snuffing runs in scenarios where the OLB's are covering the flats (on top of traditional responsibilities). Basically you need your linebackers to be pretty coached up.
This video @LTtxfan posted details it pretty well:
What are the odds Gideon is not one of the 10 on-field assistants? That feels like the only way to not have a gap in the staff (but unlikely). Did notice this from the FootballScoop article announcing Coach K which suggests Gideon is CB coach:
If he takes the job, Kwiatkowski will join a Texas defensive staff that is already formed to a large extent. Bo Davis is expected to be the ‘Horns’ defensive line coach, Blake Gideon the safeties coach and Terry Joseph the cornerbacks coach and pass game coordinator.
From here feels like it comes down to the following if we want strong recruiting/development at ILB/CB:
ILB:
Glenn Schumann - Georgia
Christian Robinson - Florida
Al Washington - tOSU
Ken Wilson - Oregon
CB:
Corey Raymond - LSU
Karl Scott - Alabama
Donte Williams - USC (good recruiter - not sure about development)
Unfortunately they both coach OLBs/DEs. PK is probably looking for an ILB coach here or they will plug a CB coach for recruiting/solidifying the DB room (given that is where Coach K has the "least experience").
I think people fail to realize that Ewers is playing with an O-line that had four starters leave against the #1 Defense in the state, while also having to balance out a defense that lost all its starters and all but 1 back-up on the two-deep. You can be the #1 player in the country and not be able to carry your team in that situation. Klubnik also has the benefit of playing the aforementioned weak defense with a much better O-line.
Agreed. I would think Drayton is smart enough to realize that working under Scott Linehan is a death sentence. Sark is either the #1 or #2 offensive mind in CFB (Riley being the other). Linehan can barely put together a half decent pass play.
Yeah broadly agree with this. Feels like we’re getting over our skis again.
On the other hand, could definitely see hiring Lupoi to be LB/Co-DC with Ash or another DB centric DC as playcalling DC.
Feels like Dennis Dodds is becoming the new UT Staff mouthpiece (with FCB being CDC's). I'm all for disintermediating the LDE Austin sports media but anyone have any opinions on this guy?
Would be dope but I feel like I'd want Raymond as the last coach in that case to coach corners. Not sure Georgia's got the best defense against the spread. The two times they played the spread offenses in the SEC (Alabama/Florida), they gave up 40+ points.
Buckeye Scoop re: Urban taking Staff:
Later confirmed that they expect Pantoni to stay, Ash to go to Jax, Strong still a maybe. No word on Dennis but will update if they post anything.
