Not sure exactly what you mean, but he is officially a free agent.

I wouldn’t offer him anything, there’s much greater needs.

It's fair to acknowledge Click built a great bullpen, and that was pretty much his doing. It's also fair to acknowledge he inherited all the pitchers in the rotation (unless you want to count Odorizzi...). I don't see why there needs to be different "sides" to this, it's pretty straightforward.

Getting Contreras for cash is good. Getting him for Urquidy was not.

That doesn’t make him “more right.” It makes him half right at best. And, for what it’s worth, if you’re consistent in that logic, it means his offer for Contreras dumb, because they clearly didn’t need him either. (And it was dumb: 3+ years of control of a proven major league pitcher for a rental part part-time catcher is asinine.)

I don’t see how anyone can put McGriff above Palmeiro unless it’s a hardline stance against PEDs (which it’s clearly not for those with Bonds and Clemens there too).

Neither of those things is true. It would be a terrible decision for them not to give him a qualifying offer (and I would be shocked if he accepted).

Adley Rutschman is hardly a random. He might already be the best catcher in baseball.

Defensive metrics are a bit more tricky to begin with, and a single year is particularly noisy. But if you are looking at his, you need to go look at Yuli’s too-you might be surprised.

Somebody might offer him 3, a la Scherzer. No one is going to offer more than 3 (which is what I said).

I expect him to get 2 as well at around $40 mil/yr. Basically a similar deal to the one for 2020-21 but at higher AAV. I don’t know that the opt out is necessary, that seemed to be injury related and he’s not likely to get any more on the open market if he’s already being paid at the top.

I don’t think there’s any way any team offers Verlander a contract longer than 3 years.

Yeah, there are guys in the bullpen right now who are better at stopping left handed hitters than most LHP. It’s not really a need.

Agreed. He’s worth more than a rental with his years of control.

This would be more logical if they hadn’t gone on to trade for a different catcher in his walk year.

I don't see any readily available upgrades in CF over McCormick. If he played fulltime, his season this year projects to about 2.5 WAR, which would make him a top 8 or so CF. And he demonstrated some real improvements in his approach, striking out less and walking more. He's really underrated, in my opinion. I'd let Meyers compete with him if healthy, and obviously McCormick is even more ideally suited for a role as a platoon against LHP and/or a 4th outfielder. But I think generally it will be easier to upgrade LF/DH (someone to fill the Brantley role and let Alvarez get out of the field more) than to find someone better than McCormick.

Not sure how he fit in so well in such a Latin heavy clubhouse. At any rate, if a guy's contributions at this point in his career are more valuable off the field than on the field, then it sounds like he should be in a role off the field.

Some of you need to separate your emotions from the decision and realize you’re advocating resigning a guy who will be 39 and was worse than replacement level this year. He was a black hole on offense at a bat first position. It’s awesome he rebounded in the postseason. Thanks for the memories and let it go.

They’ve already got that guy. They need a LF. And 1B.

That’s impossible to answer without knowing how healthy he is. That plus his age is kind of the issue.
