Weird how Peter Drury praised as "a great run" by Luke Ayling yet Mo Salah gets admonished when he's actually kicked and goes down for a penalty. I wonder what the difference between the two players is? Ah, probably nothing.
Phillips didn't put a foot wrong but it was a bit of a softball to be going against the Antonio-less West Ham. No complaints, obviously, but I'm not sure he will be in the lineup against City, who are a completely different assignment. At the same time, you can't rely on Matip being fit so who knows.
I've watched that Shaqiri dime about ten thousand times. Just an unbelievable ball by a player who we're lucky to still be able to bring in off the bench. He tends to play in the midfield or out wide as a starter but he seems to be at his best for us when he gets to pull the strings a bit more. Speaks to his intelligence that he can come into a game as a sub and pick the lock that we've been trying to figure out for 75+ minutes.
Nice to be top of the table again. The Ev must've enjoyed it for the week or so they were there.
I'm still v disappointed Charles Booker didn't win the nomination. Think he'd be on the level of Jamie Harrison, in terms of how interesting he'd have made his race against McConnell.
It doesn't really make any logical sense but Joe Gomez has played a lot better in Virgil's absence. Maybe he feels like he has to step up in a more significant way or he's less intimidate by partnering w/ Fabinho, but he's looked really good the past two games. A silver lining with van Dijk's injury could be a quicker, more drastic maturation and development of Gomez.
Jota was absolutely fantastic yesterday. Such an intelligent player.
