Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
You questioned why I said "no" to everyone being elected in the next 12 years will be a Democrat. Then, I told you that there are Republicans running unopposed, so for every seat to be filled by a Democrat would be almost impossible. I don't have to have "standing" or be a "pundit" to know that. I hope this was informative. I'm simply answering your questions.

There are several seats that have a Republican running unopposed so it won't be this year. As a matter of fact, the last 4 elections have had some unopposed Republican candidates. So rather than make some idealistic prediction of what may happen, make a pragmatic one. They could easily say, "we are in the top 1% of earners and we do not want to pay more, and neither does a percentage of our voter base". They could easily say, "this youth movement is too far left and we are not going to bring any of their bills up for a vote or vote against it".

No what you are doing is what you always do. You come up with a scenario and then when I question how it will be implemented or achieved, you sit and cry about how you cannot believe that I think it's impossible when in reality I think it is possible but far less likely to happen. Then you say, "all I'm saying is that it is possible". No shit, tons of things are possible. Everyone elected in the next 12 years of congress could be a democrat. Is it possible, yes. Will it happen, no. See how that works?

The point is you said "all we really need to do is raise rates at the top", and I'm pointing out that it's not feasible right now. So since we cannot do that, what is the alternative? I think it's far more likely that they increase taxes on the entire 55% that currently pays income tax instead of just the 1%.

"Hey rich congressmen, let's pass this bill that says everyone who makes as much as US or more should pay more in taxes!" Rich congressmen: "Where do I sign!"

The people who will propose and vote on this tax plan are going to agree to this? I highly doubt it.

What is "wealthy enough"? Around 18.5% of my income goes towards taxes already and I sure as he'll don't have a lot of discretionary income.

I'm talking about the posters on here who say, "why do you care? It's not like you are super rich." This is true, but I cannot support taxing rich people more and then complain when they decide to tax me more down the road. After reading a lot of discussion on here, I'm more in favor of a UBI for everyone and getting rid of all welfare except for those who are disabled, not mentally fit, and the elderly.

If there was a way to achieve this without raising the taxes on the middle class, more people would support it imo. A lot of people say only the extremely rich would be taxed, but that will not be enough to cover the amount of money needed. Then the next richest people would be taxed more. Eventually it's going to be the entire 55% that pays income tax.

By my calculations, my tax as percentage of income was around 18.44%. I don't know what the "right" amount is. Yes, I value the government items and services that allow me to live the life that I do, that's why I have no problem paying the amount that I do, which I think is fair. Sure, I have no problems with that.- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
The fact that people think that giving more money to the government is a good thing makes me laugh.- Demarco Boyd charged with misdemeanor assault, suspended from team activities, has left the team
- Voter Suppression
I already stated on this thread that everyone who is a citizen or permanent resident should be provided a free Texas ID if they cannot afford one. If it is free to them, how is that disenfranchising them?- Voter Suppression
I only want eligible people to vote. I don't care who they vote for.- Voter Suppression
Yeah, God forbid only eligible people are allowed to vote.- Voter Suppression
The only issue I have with this, is that an ID in Texas means that you can prove you are here legally. So it would not be given to every resident.- Voter Suppression
I don't get it. No one is going to be forced to have an ID. You asked why I thought people should have an ID. I said because it is a way to identify themselves and in the case of Texas IDs, would prove that they are here legally. If they choose not to have an ID, then they should expect to be questioned on who they are and if they are eligible to vote. Voting is not the only reason to have an ID, but I'm using that as an example based on the subject of this thread.- Voter Suppression
And I said that it was my opinion that they should. I didn't say everyone is now going to be forced to have one. If you don't want an ID, that is fine. But don't complain when the police or people at the polls are questioning whether you are who you say you are.- Voter Suppression
It's just my personal opinion that it would be useful to prove your identity and prove that you are here legally. In Texas, they now require you to be a US Citizen or present "evidence of lawful presence".- Voter Suppression
That's actually not true. You may register to vote any time after you have reached the age of 17 years and 10 months so that your registration can be processed in time for an election falling on or after you turn 18 years old. Other voter eligibility requirements include: You must be a citizen of the United States. You must reside in the county where you are registering. You must NOT be a convicted felon who is currently incarcerated, on parole, or probation.* You must NOT have been declared mentally incompetent in a court of law. Once you have completed your period of incarceration, parole, and/or probation your voting rights are restored. You may need to re-register to vote. My point is just having a national ID does not automatically mean that you are eligible to vote. And I could be wrong, but I think David Dennison wants everyone in the US to have a national ID, whether they are here legally or not.- Voter Suppression
I love it. But how does this prove that people are eligible to vote? And what about the people that have other constraints besides the $16 it costs to get an ID?- Voter Suppression
Let us know when that happens. Until then, your assertion it's not voter suppression is false. Fortunately, Texas let's you use paychecks, birth certificates, government checks and other ways for you to "identify" yourself to be able to vote. You just have to fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration. - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
