Our girl is not a Forty Acre Scholar but she did choose UT's Environmental Science Program over Cal, UCLA, Washington, Rice, Columbia, and NYU.

School me on the Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon - We have visited probably a dozen times over the years. We either stay at Bright Angel or camp in a tent. Both are fun and have their advantages. If you can, hike down to Phantom Ranch and stay the night. To make a day of reservation, go into Bright Angel, go to the left of the main desk and talk to the people behind the tour desk. They usually have a cancellation or two at Phantom Ranch every day. They will try to deter you at first but if youre persistent, they will find a spot for you. Its an incredible experience. Hike down the Kaibab trail, stay the night, then hike back up the Bright Angel Trail. Make sure you walk the rim trail and go into all of the shops and museums. I love the Kolb house. Get on the bus and ride it from one end to the other. All the different views are amazing. Watch tower is awesome. Make sure you time it so you are at the sunset point at sunset. its an amazing view. Zion - We went last year and it was really great. We camped in a tent and hung out at the Zion Lodge in between hikes. The Narrows is a must do. Its different than any other hike I have been on. We didnt get to do Angel's Landing as it was closed but I have heard its amazing. We did several other hikes including the longest one up to the tallest point but I cant remember the name of it. It was a great hike and the view at the end was awesome. The little town next door is really nice and we walked in for dinner on a couple of occasions. The bus system to get around is really awesome. Try to catch a ranger talk or two if you can. They are really good. Bryce Canyon - I was really surprised by this one. It is not as big or overwhelming as the GC or even Zion but it is more intimate and just so unique in the landscapes. The hikes are really great and the views are just hard to beat. We tent camped and had a great time. We did a ranger talk and did the night sky viewing with the rangers as well. We really enjoyed Bryce Canyon a lot. We did the longest hike from one side to the other and got to experience the canyon and all of the interior views. Make sure you drive along the rim from one end to the other. The views are all different and amazing. The pizza place next to the main lodge is really good. Its a beautiful drive going from one to the next.

Beto 2020
I don't have an issue with how much he donated. And I thought his answer was sufficient and honest. I also don't have an issue with how much Bernie made or any other Democrat who has released their taxes. My only requirements are that the candidates release their taxes and those records do not show that they are compromised by a foreign power.

Breaking news - Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on fire
And hopefully they will fireproof the roof structure this time like they did when they rebuilt the roof for ND in Reims.

Macron says it will be rebuilt within 5 years.

Breaking news - Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on fire
Apparently the wood needed to replace the roof has been growing at Versailles for hundreds of years.

Breaking news - Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on fire
We were just there three weeks ago. My wife, son and I had an inspired and solemn visit. I am heartbroken I wont be able to take my other kids to see what we saw. It looks like they stopped the fire from reaching the bell towers.

Surly kids applying / attending UT
i dont think so. its not really what UT is about anymore. i remember the whole "look to your left, that person will flunk out the first year, now look to your right, that person wont graduate from UT" at orientation. now its all about retention through study groups, mentoring pods, and advisors at every step to make sure you graduate and are successful. i was like WTF? this is NOT the UT i attended!!!!

you might want to try to appeal the decision as well. i know a friend who's kid appealed their CS rejection and was able to get in. just a FYI.

Our oldest is in the CS program at UT. He was in top 10 at LT and made a little higher on SAT including an 800 on math and another 800 on the math subject test. He also had been coding since 4th grade and included several projects on his application with links. he also had insane extracurriculars and got into Plan II. He is in a house with EE and CS majors and the EE majors feel sorry for the CS students' workloads.

Texas Recruiting Notes 2021
TE Lake McRee, Lake Travis (Austin, TX): This tall drink of water has some potential, and a few early offers. A little stiff, but growing into his frame. He has received offers from Arizona, Arizona State, and Arkansas. He has played TE for 1 season, was a QB before that. He is 6'4, can jump and run well (played on LT Varsity FTBL and Basketball as a soph) and has great hands. Needs to add weight and continue to learn the TE position. great kid. my son's best friend. he is taking my son with him to the UT Spring game. Texas is monitoring him and he could earn an offer later depending on development. He would love to be a Longhorn.

2020 Democratic Nominee
No, you were right. I just don't react negatively when people disagree with me.

2020 Democratic Nominee
Bernie is a waste of time. He is unelectable. He has a place, or at least, his ideas have a place in the discussion. But he does not. And Bernie's ideas are good for pushing the discussion left and making sure we have a full discourse. But his ideas wholesale are not good for America as a whole. We need a balanced, pragmatic, progressive approach, not wholesale socialism or communism. We need to establish social services, not socialism, that provide education, health care, etc. We need to marry those social services that provide a healthy, educated workforce with an capitalistic economic system. I favor Beto, Kamala, Klobuchar and Biden in some sort of combination that works best for electing a Democrat and getting Trump out of office.

Donald Trump 2019
Nice whataboutism. Obama had to dig the US out of the hole Bush / Republican party's policies put us in. Once he dug us out of the hole, he lowered spending every year thereafter. Over the last 40 years, Ds have decreased spending while Rs have increased spending while cutting revenue. It's insanity. No responsible person runs a business that way nor does a responsible person handle their own finances that way. Its irresponsible and not acceptable. Now back to the point, we already pay for everyone's medical care. the people opting out are trying to freeride on the rest. again, like Rs economic policies, its irresponsible and not acceptable. and i thought the Rs were the party of personal responsibility. the reality is they are all about personal responsibility when they think it will affect them (everyone has to get car insurance cause what if one of those unemployed poor people run into my car?). and they are all not about personal responsibility when it will not (i dont care if that poor person doesnt have insurance but good god dont do anything that will make my insurance premium go up!). of course they are too stupid or ignorant to understand they are already paying for that poor person in all the ways i cited above and they would actually save money if we had an effective universal health care plan. oh and of course they turn a blind eye to personal responsibility when it conflicts with the desires of special interest groups like insurance companies.
