Negative Recruiting Your Own School: The aggy Screenshot Megathread
And there are other epistemic reasons why people believe in conspiracy theories as well in relation to this sort of need for knowledge and certainty. So people with lower levels of education tend to be drawn to conspiracy theories. And we don't argue that's because people are not intelligent. It's simply that they haven't been allowed to have, or haven't been given access to the tools to allow them to differentiate between good sources and bad sources or credible sources and non-credible sources. So they're looking for that knowledge and certainty, but not necessarily looking in the right places. The second set of motives, we would call existential motives. And really they just refer to people's needs to be or to feel safe and secure in the world that they live in. And also to feel that they have some kind of power or autonomy over the things that happen to them as well. So again, when something happens, people don't like to feel powerless. They don't like to feel out of control. And so reaching to conspiracy theories might, I guess, at least allow people to feel that they have information that at least explains why they don't have any control over this situation. Research has shown that people who do feel powerless and disillusioned do tend to gravitate more towards conspiracy theories. The final set of motives we would call social motives and those refer to people's desire to feel good about themselves as individuals and also feel good about themselves in terms of the groups that they belong to. And I guess at the individual level, people like to feel... Well, they like to have high self-esteem. They like to feel good about themselves. And potentially one way of doing that is to feel that you have access to information that other people don't necessarily have. https://www.apa.org/news/podcasts/speaking-of-psychology/conspiracy-theories

He was - had 658 PAs. Interestingly, he only played LF last year, though he did also play CF, 2B and 1B in 2021. He seems like a good fit to fill that Marwin/Diaz role, but I really don’t know how well he can play IF positions. I suppose Dubon fills that role, but Profar is a better offensive player. But Dubon is already here. Neither should ever hit 2nd in this lineup, but if one did, it should be Profar.

Ha, I was all in until they informed me about the 24 blood draws in 4 days or whatever the fuck. I then turned my attention to trying to sell my semen.

Wait…once in the SEC, Arch is going to get “clobbered” by his own name? His overrated name? This isn’t good.

Man, I like some aspects of vaginas, to be sure, but “totally” awesome? Not sold my man. Nothings perfect.

lol at the echoing of “thanks for throwing the sips a lifeboat, Sankey!” Like we didn’t always have our pick of whatever conference we’d like to be in, and it’s cute that they act like they don’t fucking know that. Suggesting that the SEC is doing Texas a solid here is some impressive, next-level intellectual dishonesty, even for them.

I’ve been to: Retired parks: Dome, old Arlington Stadium, Ballpark at Arlington Current: MMP, Dodger, Petco, Anaheim, Seattle, Coors, Wrigley, White Sox, PNC, Minnesota My favs are Wrigley, PNC, Minnesota (is it still Target Field?). Seattle reminds me a lot of MMP. All the others are fine, enjoyed them all. May hit Nats and the new ATL parks this summer (work trips to DC and ATL).

I’d be interested in Profar. Defensive flexibility, competent offensive player.

I live in ABQ and will road trip to Denver for a game or two. If anyone makes the trip, post in here and we can get a little meet up.

He was off in the playoffs that year but he had an historically good rookie season. At some point the sensationalized hysteria around sign stealing will die off and be placed in its proper perspective, the Astros won’t be in the WS every year, and (mostly) nobody will hate them anymore. All that is to say, “never” is a hell of a long time.- 2022-23 MLB offseason thread
We’ve gone from “Yordan is a known cheater” to “Yordan still sucked in 2019” to “Yordan sucked in a few selected postseason ABs in 2019 and 2021” in a flash. That’s some impressive goalpost movement, especially since the whole conversation was originally about Jeremy Pena.- Left Behind: A Quick Dose Of Post Big 12 Reality
I went to UH for my doctorate. The bolded part is absolutely true. I remember being astonished at how much the undergrads loathed Texas, considering these were kids who would have been born during the final years of the SWC or after it’s death, and there was no relationship between the schools throughout their lives. There was a near-Aggie level inferiority complex with them.- Left Behind: A Quick Dose Of Post Big 12 Reality
I mean, that’s what I always thought it was about. A decade and a half of the Stoops brothers and Pellini having conniption fits on the sidelines in this conference and I never once saw them draw a personal foul penalty, much less at a critical juncture of a game. Im not saying it was any kind of conspiracy, I’m saying that ref on that sideline call seemed to be looking for a reason to throw that flag…for some reason. But yeah, fuck that game forever. What did we have 2 TDs called back, plus that DT holding call, and that personal foul. I am always one to acknowledge that simple incompetence can usually explain things like this, but something seemed all fuckwards that day, beyond just incompetent refs. (Not saying OSU did anything shady or anything like that, just that shit was really weird.)- 2023 Official Astros World Champs Offseason Thread
Rolen is 10th all-time in fWAR among 3B, with nearly identical numbers to Ron Santo, another HOFer. Everyone ahead of him is in, except for ARod (obviously he has the numbers of an inner-circle HOFer) and Beltre, who will be in on his first ballot. Altuve is 25th all-time in fWAR among 2B. He has work to do. Good news is that he’s coming off an offensive season that nearly matched his MVP year. 12 more fWAR puts him in Ryne Sandberg territory; a few more and he’s right there with Biggio. And he’ll have more hardware than those guys (MVP, batting titles, WS titles).- 2023 Official Astros World Champs Offseason Thread
Yeah, no. He’s short of 50 WAR and 2,000 hits right now. There’s no way he gets in if his current numbers are his final numbers. He needs to compile at least 12-15 more WAR and 600+ more hits for voters to support him en masse. I think he gets there, but he certainly isn’t there yet.- 2022-23 MLB offseason thread

I don’t think so; I mean, there will be some pushback, but I don’t think it’ll be overwhelming. There’s a lot of time between now and then - let’s say 5-6 more active seasons, then 5-year waiting period. By then, the electorate is probably more analytically-inclined and further removed from the sensationalism of the last few years (which bodes well for Altuve given the evidence that his performance was unaffected by sign stealing). At some point people will realize how silly all of this is, and I think that’s enough time to get there. Agree that it may not be first ballot, but I think he gets in with a few more seasons like his last couple.- 2023 Official Astros World Champs Offseason Thread

My dear god these guys are the best. ”can you believe they’re posting NIL stuff on social media?!?” ”Arch is overrated and horrible, so horrible that he when can’t beat out Ewers (also horrible), he’ll transfer to Georgia, and then they’ll really be screwed!” (Seriously, try unpacking the logic in that one.) ”#5 LSU” I used to assume that they don’t actually believe the things they say; I think I was wrong.- 2023 Official Astros World Champs Offseason Thread
I love Berkman, but this is dumb. Berkman was a better hitter than Rolen, but defense exists too, and Rolen is an all-time great at 3B. It is (imperfectly) measurable and accounted for in their WAR totals (both FG and B-R value his defense roughly the same). Lance was a better hitter than a lot of guys in the HOF, he was just about 3 healthy seasons short of making it.- 2023 Official Astros World Champs Offseason Thread
I think eventually Altuve will be viewed differently - possibly even somewhat sympathetically, as it will be recognized that he bore an outsized brunt of the vitriol aimed at an entire franchise (including non-players), particularly given that (1) it is well-documented that he didn’t really do anything; (2) statistically-inclined voters (who should continue to make up more and more of the electorate) will acknowledge that his actual production seems totally unaffected by any sort of sign-stealing advantage (home/road splits, before/after 2017, etc); and (3) he was a key player on a second WS title team. I’m optimistic on his Hall chances.- 2023 Official Astros World Champs Offseason Thread
I mean yeah, if Ausmus is named GM I’m going need y’all to organize safety checks on me around the clock for a while. I’d rather Dubon bat fucking leadoff 162 times this year than that. - 2022-23 MLB offseason thread
