  1. Well, the boy swore in. Holy shit it was a bit dusty in that room. Now for the funny (and maybe humble brag, I don't know) part. As soon as we got home, he had an email from West Point. Said something like "your academic achievements have drawn our interest and we highly recommend you to apply for admission". He pretty much ignored it, but they have sent 3 more in the last week or so. Now he's thinking about it. It seems very late in the process to me for him to try to get into a service academy. My thought is that maybe West Point has a prep academy like Navy does and they would consider sticking him in there for a year. Thoughts?
  2. Yep, there's at least a dozen or so people in the Tampa/St Pete area that are livid.
  3. Given the circumstances, I'd have cheered a Pujols homer. The guy just does so much for the city even now. He has said on several occasions "I work in Southern California, but I live in Saint Louis". And yeah, that Wong DP was amazing.
  4. The boy has decided to do it. I did my best to provide him all the information that I could without endorsing any decision. He goes to MEPS this Thursday. He won't ship until next summer. I am proud that he looked at everything. He has declined a few opportunities to speak with some football and wrestling programs (small schools, no full athletic scholarships but partial coupled with academic). He is pretty locked in on doing this.
  5. I had a proud dad moment when my boy (his friend) said almost the same thing.
  6. Last weekend I was hauling around my boys and a couple of friends of one of them. One of the extras was talking about how he had never met his mother. Said that she just left and his dad has been raising him alone since. It broke my heart to hear that coming from a child. That kid has to ask himself why she left and didn't want him, although it's about the 'mom' and what she is lacking, not what the kid did wrong.
  7. So Panera, which is based in St. Louis and is was originally (and still in the STL area) known as St. Louis Bread Company, is owned by these folks. I would imagine that I will be seeing a Whataburger up here in short order. I'm good with it.
  8. Yeah, looking like I will be taking the family to town on Saturday.
  9. We put one of my boys on the atropine drops too. So far, so good.
  10. Many years ago, while driving in Cedar Park, I saw a Corvette with PPXTNDR plates. I may be off on the exact lettering, but that was the gist.
  11. Those are actually for the folks that are hung like a horse.
  12. You should post about it on Nextdoor. That’ll fix ‘em.
  13. Ee eee e eeeeeeeee Eeeeeee ee eeeeeeeeeeeee
  14. The nuc coordinator talked a bit about STA-21. That is ultra competitive, right? I think my kid is smart, but he’s just lazy when it comes to school work. He has never had to work hard to get decent grades and never gave much of a shit to get awesome grades. My fear is that he is going to take that attitude with him to nuc school if he decides to do that. I am trying to give him the no shit outlook, but he is a teenage boy. I swear, if he applied had himself, he would be deciding on which school he wants to attend on an academic scholarship instead of figuring this stuff out. if he does go this route, I am going to pass your words to him. Awesome advice.
  15. Since the money is real, it definitely raises some questions for me. They don't just give that money away for the hell of it. There's a reason for it. I imagine part of if is to retain folks, but another reason is it's a tough life. I spent just shy of 11 years in the Marine Corps, so I do have some idea of how shitty times can be. I also know that what the Marine Corps put me through has definitely made me a better person and more willing to put up with some shit that a lot of people simply won't. All I can do with my son is make sure that he has all the facts before making a decision. To be completely honest, he doesn't have a whole lot of options right now. He's very intelligent, but has slacked off some in high school. His GPA is over 3.5 and he scored a 30 on the ACT, but he has a tendency to not do his homework and relies solely on tests to get his grades up. This is troublesome for me. He does have a couple of small colleges talking to him about football, but that wouldn't be a full ride. We can wait a bit to see what happens with that after football season starts, but I'm not holding my breath. And the Navy recruiter is going to be pushing for him to make a decision fast while hanging the bonus over his head saying that it's will dry up if he waits too long. I can tell him that he shouuldn't worry about the bonus, but you all know how teenage boys are with listening to their old man.
  16. Shit... I knew you all wouldn’t let me down. I will talk with him about all you have said, especially bl. Ultimately it will be his decision, but I want it to be an informed one.
  17. That's a great point regarding waiting until the end of the first hitch. Probably why they dangle so much money at them before even getting to the fleet.
  18. My son, just wrapped up his Junior year of HS, has qualified for the Navy's Nuclear Propulsion program. Anyone on here a former or current Navy Nuc? The only person in the field that he has spoke to so far is the nuc coordinator for the area. I want the straight scoop from someone not in recruiting. They are throwing out some wild numbers for enlistment and re-enlistment bonus money. They are saying that after the 2 years of training, prior to even serving one day in the actual fleet, that they are afforded the opportunity of re-enlisting, which (again, according to recruiting people) comes with a huge re-enlistment bonus and meritorious promotion to E5. Hopefully someone on here can give us to real answers.
  19. was down by the enterprise center yesterday. They were putting the lipstick on the place, putting up the stanley cup finals signage. That place is going to be rocking Saturday.
  20. I recently started seeing these little tiny plants in little glass jars in my house. I have also concluded that my wife buys this yogurt not because she likes it better, but rather that she likes putting little tiny plants into the tiny glass jars.
  21. Took it once and was BAMF. Even got a wallet made with BAMF on it.
  22. I lived in Chicago as a kid. We knew a couple of players for the Cubs back then, too. I spent 2 summers going to every weekday home game (before Wrigley had lights). Even after all of that, I hate the Cubs and their fans are always insufferable.
