  1. @TwiceHorn ,I have little doubt that cultural and other biases exist in standardized testing, but as you imply, that doesn't mean scores don't correlate to scholastic aptitude whatsoever. I'll post the literal translation of Voltaire's famous quote (which usually gets butchered): The best is the enemy of the good. I think the question should be "can we improve the quality of college graduating classes without ignoring our state school charter?" UT-Austin need not meet the same criteria as (say) Texas State. Both can offer quality educations to somewhat differing demographics.
  2. It's an unpopular opinion, but I'd like to see test scores returned to the auto-admit criteria, along with class rank.
  3. I fear chips have jumped the shark.
  4. So . . . Moody Amphiteater sucks? I'm interested in the Sting trio show. I never saw The Police, so it might be a slight substitute, but I haven't heard good things about the venue (and I will not look forward to Sting's boatmen songs from his dumb musical nor hi yacht rock era).
  5. Huh. I think he's a fucking genius. Absolute first rate songwriter (and drunk and addict).
  6. Objection. This whole album was fantastic:
  7. Handed down 2 2015 vehicles to kids, both had CD players.
  8. I've purchased two new vehicles in the last 18 months. No CD player in either.
  9. He wasn't elite until Houston. My only point. Oh, and I laughed at his OU wardrobe, too -- light blue button down shirt and usually khakis. Every fucking game. The Men's Warehouse clearance rack. Sorry to be sartorially critical. Fuck Oklahoma, fuck Houston, and fuck Sampson. Too much?
  10. A lot of those placements were puzzling. Shandom Sahm is a good dude, but he's nowhere near the best drummer on that list. etc. etc. etc.
  11. Attempt #2 (and last):
  12. Shows up in my browser, but that probably means nothing.
  13. After years of mostly laughing at Sampson when he was at OU I'm nearly astonished he has worked himself into the "elite" category.
  14. My quick reaction would be to say the point of an offense is to . . . score points. So, one that scores more per 100 possessions than another is "better", even if it's because they get more offensive boards and hence second hand chances. I get it, though, it's not exactly elegant.
  15. Is it fair to say you don't think the KenPom stat reflects "greatness" of an offense but more its efficiency? (Not a trick question, you follow those stats far closer than I do.)
  16. "Sean Miller is already loosing me"
  17. The last 4 may not be great teams, but 'bama and Vandy were very good recent wins. Losing to A&M at home sucked. Regarding our defense: Miller knows it's not acceptable. He seems to think he can fix it to some degree. We'll see.
  18. I thought some of you aging Texas metalheads might like this poll I saw on Facebook today. It's from a music 'zine called The Texas Beat, and probably dates to the early 1990s. The photo shows Pariah's Kyle Ellison with his bandmate Jared. Kyle is holding his new Les Paul courtesy of his recent Gibson endorsemen deal. I was working with the band recording demos for a second album on Geffen the day it came in. I don't think I've ever seen a prettier Les Paul. I believe the finish was "Honeyburst". It looked like caramel sex. Unfortunately, that album never saw the light of day. They were a cool band, though, pushing back against hair metal in a style not all that different from G'n'R before them.
