Well, when you're talking about elderly artists who died . . . elderly . . . I think it's fair to say "what else could they have done?". But in the cases of Zevon and Bowie, both released outstanding albums right at the very end of their lives. Sure, they might not have done so had they not known they were dying, but we can't know for sure.
Portland is a lot of fun and in no way some homeless wasteland. (Aside: neither is SF.) Depending on one's age (ahem) the Willamette Valley absolutely rocks. I wanted to buy a vineyard, but I had left my $20M checkbook at home.

It's not up for debate. However, the assertion was that Boston is "full of" racists. While an imprecise measure, I think reasonable people could agree that implies a healthy majority of Bostonians are racists, and I just don't think that's true. That doesn't mean Boston doesn't have more racists per capita than all other US cities.
