So you group all the tracks and slip them all +/- in (say) a measure to bring the rogue misstep in line?
  2. jimmyjazz replied to Lurch's topic in Music
Drums were tracked to scratch tracks. This is unlikely to be a gold record LOL.
  3. The idea that 2019 LSU wouldn't score 20 against their defense but we scored 27 is a nice touch.

Any recs on a DAW-agnostic tutorial (book, video series, whatever) about correcting drum kit timing errors? My dad band went into a small local studio to have my daughter track 4 songs in about 5 hours on the house drum kit, and the sounds are pretty good, but given the time constraints every tune has a hiccup or two timing-wise. (I'm OK with fixing random things like that, it doesn't violate my moral code like the "Lars actually never played one of these whole measures" shit Metallica pulls.) I don't like mixing very much and I've never auto-tuned and have only slipped a kick drum here or there a few times, but I don't think I'm doing it the best way.

Yeah, I got hired for a bunch of those sessions. "We'll try to track 8 songs by 1 PM and then you can mix them for the other half day." lulz. As I recall, at least one got a little local notoriety.
  6. Sounds like a great gift to me. I'd really like to hear the difference between the new drummer and Peart.

Let me interject a curious thing I found to be true when I was recording all kinds of Austin bands: the younger and less experienced the band, the better the results if they tracked the whole band live. It's counter-intuitive, but way more often than not there was some kind of vibe that made it to tape that was totally lost when they did the "classic" drums + bass then guitars then vocals then other overdubs. An inexperienced band just can't pull that off. My work with Spoon or Alejandro? Sure, but even those guys treasured a live in the studio approach. I know for a fact that Wilco often does the same. Isolated tracks that are sterilized with grid-quantizing and auto-tuning leads to vanilla pudding. Just play. Maybe try to fix a wart or two afterwards.

Damn, I paid more than that LOL.

I wouldn't put an SM58 at the top of my list for a vocal mic. Use the SM57 until such time as you can buy a large diaphragm condenser. The design of the SM58 is intentional, meaning it is purpose-built to reject sound from the sides and especially the back (stage monitors). This helps reduce feedback in a live setting. In a studio? Not really that important. I recently bought this mic and I'm very happy with it on my voice along with acoustic guitar, etc. I find it better than the Audio-Technica AT4040 it replaced, and the price points are basically identical (~ $330). It's much more open sounding than a Shure dynamic mic. Aston Spirit

Lots of monitors have switchable low frequency curves. Mine do. I just dialed them in by ear playing known CDs. Oh yeah, pro tip: there's no shame in listening to your mixes in your car. Just make sure your phone doesn't also have a playback EQ engaged. (Ahem . . . several months of frustration leads to learned lessons.)

Adding a little flavor to some seriously good previous posts: -- don't overlook Reaper as a DAW. It sounds great, it's super powerful, and it's free. It's also a little quirky for those raised on ProTools or Logic. -- I like the rec of a Shure SM57, but not two of them unless you seriously plan to track in stereo (and it sounds like you aren't, given the Vdrums). I'd get one SM57 and a large diaphragm condenser. I'll have recs later. And they don't.
  12. Well, some of us advocated for exactly that and were told we were regarded.
  13. Ah, I didn't see the drummer singing. Nice ZZ Top covers!

Just know that no amount of absorption is realistically going to cut down the sound getting out of the room. Second lesson: egg cartons don't do shit, and don't listen to anyone who says they do.

First rule of blocking sound: you need mass. If you're considering anything approaching normal rock sound levels, your whole house is gonna hear it as well as your closer neighbords. The solution is costly -- either float a second interior room that is decoupled from the outer walls, or (at a bare minimum) consider lead sheet hung in the exterior walls.
  16. Those sound great. Who's singing? Bass player?

I've downsized from a full studio to a bedroom and I use a Scarlett. The quality of sound coming out of that box will have far more to do with the skills going into the box than the hardware itself, and yes I'm talking about pure musical talent. @Paul Wesley probably has more to say than just about anyone on surly in terms of true studio experience + musical chops. Personally, I am fascinated with the science of sound as well as the art of songwriting. Not much else. I don't have any need to be a rippin' guitar player. I did my graduate work in acoustics at UT, got my masters and bailed on my PhD after finishing all the coursework but decided an income was more interesting than writing a dissertation. I kinda regret that, but I do know acoustics. I had my moments as a legit player -- full ride to Michigan on French horn that I turned down -- I just never wanted the struggle. So, I'm down to talk acoustics, basic theory, songwriting, the recording process (which for me stops short of mixing, I'm just not that good at it).
  18. I definitely think that level of detail is going to lead to some dead threads pretty quickly. Maybe "Making Music" as a meta thread is more appropriate. Sorry to reverse field.
  19. Yeah, I know some things and have more questions than answers but I'd be happy to contribute. I'd suggest fairly specific threads (i.e., recording separate from songwriting/composition etc.).
  20. It's not the IQ test that concerns me, it's the cognitive test.
  21. No voting rights for anyone without an IQ of at least 110. That's my platform.
  22. I find the idea that this administration cares about people's diets laughable.
  23. Quitter.
  24. Somewhere on this thread I posted an estimate of male student enrollment at A&M and UT for one particular year "back when". The numbers were pretty close. The "but Sip U was coed" argument mostly works against the Aggies.
