  1. Plan "A" was to be a professional baseball player. Plan "B" was to be an architect. Plan "C" was to be an archeologist. I was offered some scholarships to play ball in college but none of the programs that offered me scholarships to play ball had architecture as a major. Plus, there was a "girlfriend" involved at the time so I gave up baseball and went to architecture school at UT. Upon graduation I worked for a small firm in east Texas for about 4 months. They went belly-up and let everyone go after not getting some of the jobs that they were banking on. Fortunately for me I had worked for a civil engineering firm for 5 summers doing some design work for them so I had gained a bit of "engineering" background. A local mining equipment manufacturing company was ramping up their engineering staff so I applied and was hired. This was in 1989. I am still with the company even though we are now on our third owner. I spent about 15 years in engineering being responsible for all hydraulic and pneumatic systems on the mobile mining equipment. For the last 15 plus years I have been on the commercial side being heavily involved in product management, sales/marketing and applications. The job has provided a very comfortable living plus it has allowed me to travel to most States and over 30 different countries. About a year into the job the architectural firm called me and wanted to know if I wanted to come back. No thanks and no regrets. It did, however, take about a year before I would even talk about or watch a baseball game once I hung up the cleats.
  2. I was in Tucson all week last week and it was cooler there than it was back home in northeast Texas.
  3. Love me some Sanford and Son. Watched it as a kid growing up and still catch the occasional episode today. Funny is funny.
  4. I enjoyed the first episode, and like Yellowstone, I am thru to the end now even if the writing goes awry. One immediate question though. Why are two "Pinkerton" men leading a wagon train? That is not part of their charter.
  5. My kids (now adults) have common sense. They understood what I was implying.

Yep, the Fonz lining up the ramp to jump the shark. Hope it steers back on course.
  7. When you are at a public toilet and you line the toilet ring with toilet paper or the pre-made sheet and the auto flush feature comes on and sucks the barrier away before you have a chance to sit down.
  8. I have impressed with my kids that it is better to be an hour early than a minute late. Tardiness is a huge no no for me.
  9. For some reason I never watched it when it first aired either. Started watching it a couple of months ago as time allows. Almost finished with season 1. In one episode you can clearly see the word “Phlugerville” on Dillon’s stadium. I really enjoy the series and I have to remember to not be too critical of the football aspects of it and the time that the “students” have and what they do away from school. You know, cause Hollywood and such.
  10. Just dropped my son from my auto insurance as he is picking his up with a new truck. I Went from having 2 fully covered trucks to just one. My rates went up because of just one vehicle now. WTH? Going to have to dig into this as it is unacceptable.

Lloyd picked Walker up after the fight and appeared to give him a pat on the back. Could they be “all good” now?

Did we see a soft side from Rip? Think that he knows the next time he intervenes ol Loyd is a goner.
  13. While I love his enthusiasm and able to share the moment with his dad, he does look a bit like Ben Stiller in Dodgeball.
  14. I have been doing a bit of flying on Delta Airlines recently. They have The Band of Brothers featured on their inflight entertainment. I have been watching one or two episodes each flight. Been getting dusty on each flight too. The mask helps to hide the tears.
  15. RIP. Certified badass mofo.
  16. I have a love/hate relationship with racoons. I have a barn cat that comes in and out of my house. So I keep food for him on my back porch. The problem with that is that I also live in a rural area so I also have racoons that want to eat the food. There is a family of 7 racoons that come around every night around 9pm to see if there is any cat food out there. Back in the Spring 5 of the raccoons were babies and they have now grown into near full size. Due to my weakness for wildlife I made the fatal mistake of feeding them too. While they are fun to watch they can become a pest. I cannot bring myself to "off" any of them. They have gotten to the point that if I open the door they will try to come inside. I can also sit outside and they will come to me. As much as I want to try to pet one of them I do know better than to do so. Unfortunately raccoons are known to carry rabies. Cat doesn't seem to mind them too much either. If he is outside when they are around he will just watch them from a chair. If they do come too close he will hiss and they will leave him alone.
  17. Late to the game with this. Daughter in NC declares that we are going to have brisket for Thanksgiving. She then proceeds to ask me to pick one out in Texas because she cannot find one in Chapel Hill nor has she or her husband ever done one before. She also tells me that they have bought an electric smoker a couple of weeks ago and want to do the brisket on it. No problem...but there is. So now I am trying to find a decent brisket in East Texas at the last minute before heading out on the road trip. Not feeling good about this. I pack it heavily in ice because we are first driving to WV for the Texas game and then after the Texas game are driving to DC for a few days. All the while keeping the meat on ice. Now mind you I have only done brisket on a wood smoker. Never used an electric smoker before. Get to my daughter’s house Wednesday around 5:00pm. Once settled in I ask where the smoker is. Daughter: oh it’s in the garage. me: great, let’s go have a look. Daughter: it is still in the box. It needs to be put together. me: what? Hasn’t even been opened and seasoned? son in law: yeah, we have been busy. So I put the thing together Wednesday night. Get up early thanksgiving day to “season it”. And finally put the meat on. SIL thought the brisket turned out great. I was embarrassed with the product. Daughter knew it was not my best effort but appreciated it anyway. In defense of my SIL, he did not grow up having a father in his life so there are a lot of things that he is still learning. They will be moving back to Texas after the first of the year. The electric smoker is going back to Texas with me so that I can put it to use.
  18. I enjoy your content with photos such as these. I am always enthralled with what people leave behind and simply how things are just abandoned. Am also curious as to why? A truly what is “ones man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.

Yes, the poles are a tremendous help. Use them most of the time.
  20. Yes, I am 55 and do most of my hiking alone so I typically over pack with snacks, first aid, water and other “just in case” essentials.
  21. You will have plenty of time to do plenty of them. I was there November 10-12. Many of the trails allow for getting "off trail" to do some boulder climbing for various views. The following are the hikes that I did: Hidden Valley. I did this one the afternoon of my arrival. It is about a mile loop and I took about an hour to do it. The sunset views are not too bad. The next day I did the following hikes: 49 Palms Oasis. I covered about 3.25 miles in about 2:00 hours. Part of the 2 hours was just hanging out at the oasis. Around a 620' elevation gain. It had some nice vista views and the oasis was really nice. No shade until you get to the oasis. I did this one first thing in the morning. Willow Hole Trail. I covered about 7.4 miles in about 3:30 hours. Fairly flat without any shade. Tons of Joshua Trees and interesting rock formation in the middle of the hike. There are quite a few stretches where you are walking in washes which is very sandy. On this trail you can do some rock climbing throughout the hike. A bit of the 3:30 hours was also spent just sitting on a large rock in the shade once I got to the Willow Hole. There is some nice climbing once you get past the "end of the trail". Ryan Mountain Trail. I timed this one so that I would be at the summit at sunset. This requires hiking back down in the dusk/dark. It is uphill all of the way up and all downhill on the return. The elevation gain is just over 1000' in 1.5 miles. I did about 3 miles in 2 hours. Again, I spent a good deal of time at the summit taking in the sunset. Again no shade. The views are fantastic. This is a must. On my last day I did the Lost Horse Mine Loop. This loop is about 7 miles and I covered it in around 3 hours allowing some time to explore the mine ruins. This was my favorite hike as it had the most diversity of views as any of them. The elevation gain is around 900'. No shade. Be sure to drive to Keys West Overlook to have a commanding view of Palm Springs. This is a nice sunset visit as well. I did drive the length of the park. The southern part is quite different than the northern part. Be sure to check out Skull Rock. The park is also nice to visit during the dead of night for some star gazing. I did this in the Skull Rock area. I have posted a few pics that I took in the "Picture You Took" topic under "Hobbies".
  22. Just pulled into Morgantown for the game tomorrow. 3rd time to be here for a UT game. Met some nice WVU fans that we will tailgating again with. Headed to DC for a few days after the game. Then to NC for Thanksgiving with the daughter and family and then back to Texas. Have enjoyed the road trips up here.
  23. I spent a couple of days last week hiking in The Joshua Tree National Park.

While watching the other night I basically said the same thing that all of this would be on ABC's World News Tonight.

I do a lot of hiking and take pride in myself for being in good shape for my age. I have come to the conclusion that the Aesop fable, "The Hare and the Tortoise", is a bit of a lie. Just this past week I spent 2-1/2 days of hiking in The Joshua Tree National Park. Some of the trails I hiked I was alone with my just my thoughts whereas there were a few that were quite popular and thus there were many others on the trail. Being a fairly competitive person I would prefer to pass people than them pass me. I can always make good time except when I am going down steep grades and it is particularly worse when there are steps/rocks to navigate. My right knee does not have the structural integrity anymore to do a deep bend required to lower myself so I am always having to stagger or shuffle my steps so that my right foot is the lead foot to step down. This leads to having to take many more steps and more time. That, and I get passed.
