  1. Un-ironically, "Common Sense" was published 250 years ago today. Thomas Paine had some salient points: "Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions."
  2. I can't figure out why my photos aren't posting and why my links aren't playable. @immamac any ideas?
  3. Holy shit. This guy, Tim Grimm, has cajones the size of watermelons. Imagine getting up in front of a United States flag and playing this song in a Texas bar. I love the body language of the MAGA folks in the crowd. It was also heartening to see the response of most of the people there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rizh2W1a4EI Here we go again Thought we'd been down that road Thought we'd left it all behind I guess we should have known It's fight or flight It so far from being great I can't believe that laughing fool Might lead us to our graves Don't it break your heart? As it breaks my heart? Damn that man Who tears this country apart He's got no shame He's got no soul He's got no poetry inside To make him whole When I was a kid In public schools I thought we learned a thing or two Beyond the golden rule We put faith in science And truth in words Acts of kindness and hope For all the world Don't it break your heart? As it breaks my heart? Damn that man Who tears this country apart He's got no shame He's got no soul He's got no poetry inside To make him whole Sometimes we walk a thin line With our heads deep in the sand One man's sense of justice Ties another woman's hands And the simple price of freedom To be left alone and dream Is in the hands of his judges Who just bend the law and scheme Don't it break your heart? As it breaks my heart? Damn that man Who tears this country apart He's got no shame He's got no soul He's got no poetry inside To make him whole If you follow him, and you can count to seven If you call yourself a Christian and you believe in Heaven Greed, Lust, Sloth, Pride, Envy, Gluttony and Wrath It's clear as day- they stormed the house, All the hate inside his little mouth Damn that man Don't it break your heart ? Cause it breaks my heart Damn that man who tears this country apart He's got no shame, he's got no soul He's got no poetry inside to make him whole Nine years we've lived with sorrow, nine years we shook our heads It't time we lift the hammer And ring them bells instead The Times they are a Changin', Honey in the Lion's head It's time we stamp these fires out And let the peace be spread
  4. https://x.com/travisakers/status/2017785295853236311 There was a third candidate, John Huffman, also Republican, who siphoned off about 16.5% of the vote.

  7. I wonder when the last time I held an actual penny in my hand was. Last year sometime, I'm sure. Maybe.
  8. Dow lays off 4500 in Houston. https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/dow-layoffs-houston-texas-21322264.php Last paragraph in the article: Dow is the latest company joining a growing list of major employers announcing big job cuts. On Wednesday, Amazon said it would trim 16,000 positions to reduce bureaucracy, while United Parcel Service revealed plans to cut up to 30,000 operational jobs this year. Pinterest also announced layoffs this week, letting go of 15 percent of its staff, in part because of its increasing reliance on AI.
  9. I wonder if Stephen Miller deciding to do this in the wintertime was a huge miscalculation. Right now, the protestors are self-selecting because they are the ones who are ideologically motivated enough to stand out in sub-zero temperatures. The criminal element and people who might otherwise use this as a chance to riot and loot are all staying home saying "fuck this ... it's cold outside." The only people out there right now are the truly pissed off. Miller's trying to provoke a confrontation in which an ICE officer or two get killed in order to impose martial law, but the ICE agents are facing people right now who are educated and who may have even dabbled in pacifism. Not in 'Nam, of course. Also, Republicans who delude themselves into thinking that this is some well-funded operation by paid agitators are walking into a tsunami. Even the dullest American understands, even if he's not willing to admit that he was wrong, that this would not be happening if those agents were not there. No matter the justification Republicans want to give, if violence ramps up and Americans see goon squads killing soccer moms, it's going to look bad for them.
  10. Yeah, we're living in upside-down world when the young lady in the photo I posted above has been arrested and men who are dressed in masks out there gunning down citizens who are doing nothing wrong have not been arrested. The Nazis sucked, but at least they had the decency to show their fucking faces.
  11. This is an attempt at intimidation. This is going to backfire spectacularly on the Republicans. Look at these terrorists! Oh, and would .. a couple of them.
  12. Given that we're talking about people dying by gunshots, "recalibrate" strikes me as an unfortunate choice of words.
  13. Trump:: "We take out 25 murderers, drug dealers, we take out of the whole group of people by the thousands, and if we get one person a little bit wrong, headlines."
  14. The "looking to" part will be the new normal. The "replicating" part will not be the new normal.
  15. Isn't that guy this guy, the guy who lost his job as an investment professional and wants to look like HItler? https://www.ourmidland.com/news/article/jayden-scott-minneapolis-resignation-21292806.php
  16. Silly Elon! All he had to do was ask Grok if the Nazis were socialists! Here's what Grok had to say: No, the Nazis were not actual socialists, despite the inclusion of "socialist" in their party's full name—the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). The term was strategically adopted in the early 1920s to appeal to working-class Germans disillusioned by economic hardship after World War I, drawing them away from genuine socialist and communist movements. britannica.com +1 In reality, Nazi ideology was a form of far-right fascism emphasizing extreme nationalism, racial hierarchy, militarism, and authoritarian control, which directly opposed core socialist principles like class equality, worker ownership of production, and international solidarity. en.wikipedia.org +1 Key evidence includes: Persecution of leftists: Upon gaining power in 1933, the Nazis immediately targeted socialists, communists, and trade unions. They banned socialist parties, arrested thousands for "illegal socialist activity," and sent many to concentration camps like Dachau, which initially held primarily left-wing political prisoners. encyclopedia.ushmm.org +1 Hitler viewed Marxism (the foundation of socialism) as a "Jewish conspiracy" and explicitly rejected it. Economic policies: While the Nazis implemented heavy state intervention in the economy to support rearmament and war efforts, they favored privatization and corporate profits aligned with the regime's goals. Major industries remained in private hands, and business elites like those from Krupp and IG Farben profited immensely under Nazi rule—contrary to socialist ideals of abolishing private ownership. britannica.com +1 Their "socialism" was rhetorical, often redefined as "national socialism" to mean collective loyalty to the state and race, not economic redistribution. Ideological roots: The party's early platform included some populist economic points, but these were quickly abandoned or reframed after Hitler consolidated power in the mid-1920s. Influential Nazis like Joseph Goebbels and Gregor Strasser pushed for more "socialist" elements, but they were sidelined or eliminated (e.g., during the 1934 Night of the Long Knives). britannica.com +1 Modern claims that the Nazis were socialists often stem from political rhetoric aiming to associate left-wing ideas with fascism, but historians overwhelmingly classify Nazism as a far-right movement. history.uwo.ca +2 For a deeper dive, resources like the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum or academic histories provide detailed context on this distinction.
