  1. I still can’t get over Burke being there at all. He’s not worth a dollar. Ignoring obvious guys (Bell, Alou, Finley, Luis Gonzalez, Hampton, Bass, etc.) who belong on higher tiers but won’t fit due to space, there are innumerable more worthy candidates at that level: Ausmus, Adam Everett, even Spiers come immediately to mind. You could pick any random jag and do better than Burke. Eric Bruntlett put up more WAR in Houston over the same time frame. Pull a random name out of a hat-Orlando Miller has twice as much career WAR in 2/3 the seasons. I’m probably taking this too seriously. But seriously. Come on.
  2. I was thinking this same thing. In fact, if you start studying the late Roman Empire, there's a sense in which even it didn't fall so much as become decentralized. Its language, institutions, even infrastructure endured, in many ways down to the present.
  3. If only we had a board for news and current events.
  4. I wouldn’t trade the corpse of Ed Price for him. No thanks.
  5. Bourn averaged 4.5 WAR for 4 seasons at the peak of his career (2009-2012). Doran put up a couple of 4+ WAR seasons and one at 5, averaging 3.4 for 8 seasons. Those guys are huge bargains at $1. And including them on the same tier as Chris Burke is almost insulting.
  6. They signed Tyler White as well.
  7. Like in distinguishing between adjectives and nouns, for instance.
  8. My exact reaction to these two responses back to back.
  9. The 3/5ths comprise and forcing car dealerships to close one day of the weekend: two historic atrocities.
  10. I’d put it closer to maybe 20 myself, but that’s not unreasonable.
  11. Predictable response on surly. But if you actually believe most churches are literally engaged in money laundering or are hoarding a bunch of money, you’re not as clever as you think you are.
  12. Megachurches (and especially Osteen) are not exactly representative of organized religion in general.
  13. You can’t “obviously begin” a slide without sliding. We’re never going to agree on this. What’s the point?
  14. McAulay argues that it violates the spirit of the rule, but even he admits it doesn’t violate the letter. They need to clarify the rule. He didn’t obviously begin a slide. But I’m sure the next regurgitation of breaking down the play will make it all somehow clear.
  15. That’s a political party doing the grifting, not a religion. Admittedly they are indistinguishable to many people.
  16. How can you have “obviously begun” a slide if you don’t actually slide? Doesn’t seem terribly obvious.
  17. No, not your comment. I think you and I are basically on the same page, down to the rule needing to be changed (you’ll see that if you keep reading the thread). And to your feelings on it in a championship game. I’ll take “bush league” 58 yard TD runs all day while the loser whines about sportsmanship.
  18. I get your point, but Rolen is not the best example. He’s very underrated (fWAR and bWAR both greater than for McGwire, for instance). He should be in in any case.
  19. There aren’t 32 better QBs than Minshew. He should be starting somewhere.
  20. You keep saying this like it automatically disproves my point (and like I haven’t read it multiple times). I know he said that. Even if he DIDN’T say that, it’s clear it was intentional. But is faking a slide “obviously beginning” one? That’s what’s in question. I don’t see any reason to necessarily interpret the rule that way.
  21. I don’t believe he began one. We’re not going to ever agree on this. And that’s precisely why it has to be clarified going forward (if not just removed like you propose, which I agree is cleaner).
  22. I still don’t believe the call was incorrect, but that suggested rule change is reasonable.
