Trump’s America
So, I had a convo yesterday with my Trumpy FIL. He seemed far more subdued in his Trump enthusiasm than in the past. One of the topics that came up was environmentalism/conservation. He is a climate change denier, or, more accurately, doesn't believe we can or should do anything about it that would harm us economically. But he is an outdoor type guy and believes in conservation. He agreed that the EPA and environmental laws have done a lot to clean up the nation over the last several decades and should continue. And also that corporations are not going to do it on their own. I don't believe he understands the degree to which Trump is gutting the EPA, the clean water and clean air acts. He mumbled something about it being transferred to some other agency. It was subtle, but I do believe that he is coming to understand that this shit ain't right. And that its little more than corporatism.

Trump’s America
I really don't mind it at all. But my engine has pretty low rotating mass at 2L. I'll grant that start stop and cylinder deactivation may shorten the life of an engine, subjecting it to additional transient operating conditions. But there's a whole lot of other, more fundamental shit that's keeping the modern vehicle from being a 100k++ vehicle. Direct injection, high-pressure fuel pumps, turbochargers, extensive electronics operating in high temp and high/variable humidity conditions.

Texas -- a failed state
A complete MAGA-off. A Trump blow-bang. The rest of the country is slowly backing away from Trump, Texas is doubling down. We already know Texans are stupid, we'll see if we are collectively fucking stupid (h/t Jeff Skilling).

Trump’s America
Cylinder shut-down has matured as a technology and is used on Corvettes and V8 trucks to significant effect, common estimates are 7.5% improvement in fuel economy. And, yeah, if the temp drops enough at a stop to kick on the compressor, start/stop will start the engine, even if your foot is still on the brake.

2026 Midterms ...
- Epstein and Maxwell
A lot of lawyers in high profile non political positions see themselves as exemplars of righteousness, or good behavior or something. And their colleagues have the same expectations of them. Kind of like Bozo prattles on about. The modern tech bro is someone who put a gloss on the personal computer and the internet, and didn't contribute much to our lives or this country. Maybe if you want to throw Kilby, Noyce, Moore, Hewlett and Packard, and Berners-Lee in there you might be onto something. Maybe even Gates and Jobs. But fuck the rest of those incel, spectrum, socially retrograde fuckers arriving since about 2000.- The Trump Economy
Also strikes me that this does coal miners, the labor, a real disservice. Coal's been on the way out for 20-30 years and I guess that sucks for miners, but they've had a good long while now to adjust and GTFO out of pennsyltucky. This is at best going to give them 3-4-5 years to work their shitty jobs and not get on with it.- JD Vance Fucked 5 couches as a hillbilly, then went on to kill the pope
I mean, I haven't had one in like 15 years, but ate em regular for probably 30 prior to that and they were always round.- JD Vance Fucked 5 couches as a hillbilly, then went on to kill the pope
And since when were they square?- Epstein and Maxwell
And it very well might be now that more of this is in the open that civil attorneys take up the victims' mantle. The evidentiary requirements of a civil case are less strenuous, and you don't have the ethical questions of bringing a case that needs discovery. And the negative publicity factor probably means defendants may be anxious to settle generously to stop the bleeding. That may be less than ideal from the public standpoint, but it's something.- Surly kids who can't get into UT
UTA doesn't get much credit as anything but a commuter school, but I was on campus recently and found it to be actually pretty vibrant. And that area of Arlington has some "color" for a place known to be generica. Probably not a bad place to get started, at all.- The Leopards Eating Faces and Unlubed Dildo of Consequences Thread
Sex pest amuses me terribly as well. As does "political pervert." Also, at some point during my internet explorations, I came across white supremacist message boards expressing such vile and casual racism that I couldn't do anything else but laugh. I'm also known to laugh uncontrollably at gory horror movie scenes.- Epstein and Maxwell
That has been attempted, by individual plaintiffs, probably not particularly well-funded, on several occasions. They've all gone away, one way or another, through intimidation or payoff or some other means. There are sexual exploitation plaintiffs attorneys that more or less specialize in this kind of thing and shouldn't be daunted by the deep pockets of defendants, but for whatever reasons, this hasn't been much of a thing. And that itself may be a sign that it is extraordinarily difficult to find real evidence against these fucks, from a conspiracy of silence or whatever else is going on. And one of the problems that creates for a criminal case is that that victim/plaintiff is now "on record." And the slightest deviation in their current story from any previously on record can destroy their credibility in a criminal case. As a prosecutor, you really prefer to have a "blank slate" witness and/or victim. Long story short, if there were slam dunk, or even difficult but winnable civil cases out there on this, there's no shortage of well-funded, skilled civil lawyers to take their cases and do as you say. Just like the stock market is a vehicle for "price discovery," the plaintiffs bar exists as a vehicle for viable claim discovery.- The Leopards Eating Faces and Unlubed Dildo of Consequences Thread
Sort of amusing story about a word "adopted" as a child. At some point when I was pretty young, like second or third grade, one of my friends apparently overheard a parent or their parents calling someone a "pervert." But what he heard was "perver," no t. He knew somehow that that was not a good thing to be, so my little friend group ran around calling each other "perver" for several months, until parents told us that was a word we shouldn't be using, but without detailed explanation. Consequently, all my life, I have found the word to be funny. When an actual pervert is probably not funny at all.- The Leopards Eating Faces and Unlubed Dildo of Consequences Thread
Yeah, kids will take in that word without understanding it and just knowing it's wrong and naughty, and therefore fun to say. Of course, that also means that that they heard that word, which might well have come along with some nastier racist screeds and indoctrination. On the other hand, to know it's naughty speaks the other way.- Epstein and Maxwell
You can legitimately question Garland's judgment as to whether to engage in "political" prosecutions that might legitimize Trump's complaints and his second-term actions. I do that all the time. That was a legitimate concern, and Garland ended up on what appears to be the wrong end of it. Still, though, even had he acted more expeditiously, it wouldn't have changed the outcome. Any allegation that Merrick Garland was unethical or immoral is out of bounds, though. Any demand that a man who has spent huge chunks of his career as a federal judge at the trial and appellate level to chuck the rule of law and imprison or incapacitate Donald Trump by any means necessary is a nice fantasy, but ultimately delusional. And, again, that does not reflect on the person in question's morality or ethics. I think Holder during the Obama administration was kind of a dumbass, but again, not unethical or immoral. US Attorneys offices across the country are filled with civil servant child sex prosecutors who are foaming at the mouth to bring federal charges against far lesser offenders than Epstein and Maxwell, regardless of administration and AG. Had they been restrained from doing their jobs by higher-ups, for political or any other purposes, we would have heard about it by now. Just as we did from the 2008 Epstein mess.- Surly kids who can't get into UT
Yeah, no doubt. I don't have kids, so no dog in the hunt at all. I've done a good bit of mentorship over the years, though, at work and for friend's kids given that I have or had a somewhat unusual career path that is extremely hot right now or has been for a few years. - Epstein and Maxwell
